    Abstract: An electrostatic charge regulator capable of holding an electric charge in a stable state and superior in environmental stability, as well as a method for making the electrostatic charger regulator and an image forming method using the electrostatic charge regulator, are disclosed. The electrostatic charge regulator has a surface layer containing a non-linear resistor on a base member such as a carrier, a developer sleeve, a developer blade, or a transfer belt. The electrostatic charge regulator is obtained by forming on the base member a surface layer by using a thin film of a composite metal oxide or by using dispersion of powder of the composite metal oxide in a high molecular compound, the composite metal oxide being prepared using at least one metal selected from Group A metals (Zn, Ti, Si, Al, Zr) and at least one metal selected from Group B metals (Bi, Sb, C, Y, La, Pr, Sc, Ce, Sn, Pb). The image forming method uses the above electrostatic charge regulator to form an image.

    Abstract: Disclosed are a charging member comprising a resol-type phenol resin having a specific structural unit and a method for manufacturing the charging member and an electrostatic latent image developer, image forming apparatus, and image forming method using the charging member. The resol-type phenol resin is characterized by the fact that in that the structural unit contains, in particular, a —[(CH2)pNR1R2] group directly bonded to an aromatic ring. The resol-type phenol resin exhibits high charging property and has excellent environmental stability and hence it can impart stable charge to a toner, whereby a high quality image in electrophotography can be maintained for a long period of time.

The charge transporting material comprises charge transporting fine particles formed with a charge transporting organic compound as an essential component, said charge transporting organic compound being selected from high molecular compounds and low molecular compounds, each having a positive hole transporting property or electron transporting property. The fine particles are granulated by emulsion dispersion, with a preferred average particle size of 0.01 to 50 .mu.m, and particle size distribution of 1.0 to 2.0 in terms of the square root of the ratio of 90% average particle size to 10% average particle size of the total volume or total number of the fine particles.
