    Abstract: A search apparatus includes a device for transporting a long recording medium and positioning a desired image on the recording medium in a predetermined position, and a device for moving a carrier, supporting the recording medium, in the width direction thereof. The apparatus is provided with a detection device for detecting the reference position of the carrier, and when the carrier is moved, the moving distance of the carrier is measured without failure after the reference position has been detected. Movement of the carrier is controlled on the basis of the measurement value.
