    Abstract: Provided are titanium oxide fine particles which are excellent in transparency and are less photocatalytically active while maintaining a high refractive index, a dispersion of such fine particles, and a method for producing such a dispersion.     Abstract: In a method of producing scale-like composite particles, a dispersion liquid is prepared to include scale-like inorganic particles coated with resin and spherical fine particles having an average particle diameter in a range from 0.1 to 3.0 ?m. The scale-like inorganic particles coated with the resin and the spherical fine particles is dispersed in water, alcohol, or a mixture dispersant of the water and the alcohol. Then, the dispersion liquid is sprayed in a heated air stream for drying so that the spherical fine particles are adhered on the scale-like inorganic particles coated with resin by an electrostatic force generated by contact between the particles.

A refractive index of an inorganic oxide used for forming the utmost outer layer is 1.73 or less, and a difference in the refractive indexes between the utmost layer and a layer adjacent thereto is 0.6 or less. Alternatively, the thickness of at least one of a second or higher inorganic oxide layer is within ±20% of a value d given by an equation: d=(&lgr;×X/4)/n, wherein &lgr; indicates a wavelength of visual light, X indicates an odd integer, and n indicates the refractive index of the inorganic oxide.
