    Abstract: In an optical device the light emitting unit emits first light and second light having different polarization states. The light generation unit generates third light on the basis of the first light and the second light whose phase difference has been adjusted by the phase adjustment unit. The first light and the second light are incident on a birefringent element. A control unit controls at least one of a temperature of the birefringent element and a voltage applied to the birefringent element. The light generation unit includes a nonlinear optical element generating the third light on the basis of at least one of the first light and the second light. The first light and the second light emitted from the birefringent element are incident on the nonlinear optical element of the light generation unit.
