  • Patent number: 5447999
Abstract: A polymerization process, comprises a polymerization vessel, a reflux condenser installed outside the polymerization vessel and a pipe connected between the reflux condenser and a wall of the polymerization vessel with an end thereof opening into a gaseous phase region inside the polymerization vessel, for returning the liquid condensate to the polymerization vessel, wherein said end projects from an inner surface of the wall of the polymerization vessel into the gaseous phase region. In polymerizing a monomer having an ethylenically unsaturated double bond using the polymerization apparatus, the quantity of heat removed by the reflux condenser is increased stepwise or continuously with progress of the polymerization, such that not less than 20% of the total reaction heat generated during the whole course of the polymerization is removed by the reflux condenser. With 100 or more repeated polymerization runs, polymer scale deposition inside the vessel is minimal even below the pipe end.

  • Patent number: 5206085
Abstract: A preformed yarn useful for forming composite articles is disclosed which includes a core of a multiplicity of fibers, fine powder provided in the interstices between the fibers, and a flexible sleeve formed of a thermoplastic resin and surrounding the core. The fine powder is formed of a material which neither melts nor reacts with the thermoplastic resin at a temperature up to 450.degree. C. and at a temperature up to the melting point of the thermoplastic resin. The incorporation of the fine powder between the fibers is effected by injecting fine powder-containing air from a jet nozzle and blowing the air against a bundle of the fibers.

  • Patent number: 4663022
Abstract: A continuous process for the production of carbonaceous pitch, including heat-treating an aromatic heavy oil in a first thermal cracking zone for obtaining a first cracked product, and introducing the first cracked product into a second thermal cracking zone where it is thermally cracked by direct contact with a gaseous heat transfer medium to form distillable cracked components and a mesophase-containing pitch. The liquid phase in the second thermal cracking zone, including the mesophase-containing pitch, is discharged therefrom and separated into a mesophase-rich pitch and a matrix pitch having a low concentration of mesophase. The mesophase-rich pitch is recovered while at least a portion of the matrix pitch is recycled to the second thermal cracking zone.

  • Patent number: 4071687
Abstract: A direct-heat arc furnace for the production of molten iron by continuously melting and reducing directly reduced iron or directly reduced iron ore, which comprises electrodes fixed in position and a furnace body to be driven so that the relative position of arc spots at the tips of the electrodes and the surface of the molten material in the furnace move continuously, and in which the shape and moving path of the furnace body are such that the range of tapping port movement is minimized and the melting of the feed stock and the tapping of the molten iron are performed continuously.

  • Patent number: 4023962
Abstract: A process for regenerating steel scrap by melting and refining it, the improvement wherein carbon is added to molten scrap steel melt in an amount sufficient to adjust the carbon content of the melt to 0.6 to 3.0%, and the scrap steel is refined by blowing oxygen therein. This method can also be applied to the production of steel from reduced iron.
