  • Patent number: 7404679
Abstract: A terminal element for fiber optic communication has an elongated body defining a body axis and having a first end from which an optical fiber extends along the body axis. The body has a second end with an angled surface offset at an angle from the body axis. The fiber extends partly through the length of the body, and terminates at a fiber end surface. The second portion has an optical entry surface registered with the fiber end surface such that light emitted from the fiber end surface enters the optical entry surface. At least one of the fiber end surface, angled surface and optical entry surface has a figured optical form with a non-planar shape.

Date of Patent: July 29, 2008
    Assignee: Tektronix, Inc.
    Inventors: Ralph Ebbutt, Talapker Imanbayev
  • Publication number: 20070172175
Abstract: A fiber optic ferrule assembly has an elongated ferrule body on a major axis and having a rear end opposite its free end. The body has a passage extending from a rear aperture at the rear end to a foreword aperture at the front end. A cable extending from the rear end of the ferrule has several optical fibers extending to the forward end. The ferrule has several alignment features, each closely receiving a fiber. A hermetic sealant applied to the alignment features to provide a hermetic seal. The sealant may be applied via a lateral access aperture, which may be sealed by the sealant. The ends of the passage may be sealed by different materials, and the cable may have a jacket that is partially received in the ferrule.

  • Patent number: 7189007
Abstract: A terminal element for fiber optic communication has an elongated body defining a body axis and having a first end from which an optical fiber extends along the body axis. The body has a second end with an angled surface offset at an angle from the body axis. The fiber extends through the length of the body, and terminates at a fiber end surface flush with the angled surface. A lens element is positioned adjacent to the angled surface. The fiber may be hermetically sealed to the body at a position away from first end, and may be sealed with a flexible material at the first end.
