  • Patent number: 7913583
Abstract: A transmission gear selector including a pivotal shift lever with a grip portion and an attachment structure that is operably coupled to an automatic transmission for shifting the transmission. A locking member pivots with the shift lever and is moveably engageable with an engagement surface that defines a park position detent. When the locking member is engaged with the park position detent, the shift lever cannot be moved out of the park position. The mechanical linkage includes a driver-operated member which, when actuated, causes the mechanical linkage assembly to bias the locking member out of engagement with the park position detent. A solenoid disposed within the grip portion is coupled with the mechanical linkage assembly and includes a plunger that can prevent the mechanical linkage from biasing the locking member out of the park position detent. An installation method for a gear selector is also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20080100086
Abstract: The present invention provides for an instrument panel assembly for a vehicle. The instrument panel assembly includes a dashboard with an interior panel disposed proximal to the dashboard. A shift lever is pivotally attached to the interior panel and movable between a drive position for allowing movement of the vehicle and a park position for preventing movement of the vehicle. At least one wall extends inwardly from the interior panel to define a pocket complementary in configuration to a portion of the shift lever for receiving the shift lever when in the parked position and the shift lever spaced from the pocket when in the drive position.

  • Patent number: 7137499
Abstract: The invention provides an apparatus for shifting an automatic transmission having a shift position select lever. The invention selectively shifts the transmission to one of a plurality of different transmission shift positions. The invention includes a steering column positionable in a passenger compartment of a vehicle. A switch is mountable in the passenger compartment of the vehicle and operable to emit a first signal representative of a desired change with respect to a transmission shift position. A motor generates a moving force and a linkage associated with the motor to transmit the moving force from the motor to a shift lever of a transmission of the vehicle. A sensor is responsive to a current transmission shift position and emits a second signal corresponding to the sensed current transmission shift position. A controller is responsive to the switch and to the sensor.
