    Abstract: The electrochemical cell according to the present invention comprises an anode of a metal capable of reducing sulphur dioxide, an inert porous cathode with the electron-type conductivity, preliminarily anodically polarized to a potential of from 4.5 to 4.7 V relative to a lithium electrode, and a non-aqueous electrolyte containing sulphur dioxide as a cathodic depolarizer, at least one aprotic organic solvent with a donor number of from 20 to 50, and an electrolyte salt which is inert relative to sulphur dioxide and the anode metal.
