    Abstract: The present disclosure provides a surgical instrument that includes an end effector configured to slideably receive a cutting member. The end effector includes a first and second jaw that is movable relative to the first jaw, a hot zone in a center portion of the end effector, and cool zones in both side portions of the end effector. The first and second jaws define an elongate slot therebetween, to slideably receive the cutting member within the elongate slot to cut tissue located between the first and second jaws. The first jaw includes a first insulative layer and a second insulative layer in the hot zone, a first electrode layer on the first insulative layer, a second electrode layer on the second insulative layer, and heat sink layers in the cool zones. The heat sink layers are configured to cool the tissue in the cool zones to minimize lateral thermal spread.

    Abstract: A bowel retractor device comprising a bendable collar, a flexible planar film, and at least one preformed opening defined in the flexible planar film is disclosed. The at least one preformed opening is configured to retainingly support at least one section of bowel. The at least one preformed opening comprises an open center portion defining a hole in the flexible planar film and a plurality of radially-extending slots extending from an outer perimeter of the hole. Each radially-extending slot comprises a slot width that is different from a diametrical width of the hole to form a plurality of gripping portions extending inward toward the open center portion. The gripping portions are formed for gripping the at least one section of bowel to retainingly support the at least one section of bowel inserted through the open center portion.

    Abstract: A fastener cartridge can comprise a compressible, collapsible, and/or crushable cartridge body and fasteners embedded within the cartridge body which can be utilized to fasten tissue. The anvil can be engaged with the fastener cartridge to compress, collapse, and/or crush the cartridge body and deform, or otherwise deploy, the fasteners contained therein. As the fasteners are deformed or deployed, the fasteners can capture at least a portion of the cartridge body therein along with at least a portion of the tissue being fastened. In various embodiments, the cartridge body can comprise a thickness which is not uniform thereacross.
