  • Patent number: 8178180
Abstract: The invention relates to a heat-sealable packaging material and a sealed package formed from the same, especially for packaging foodstuffs. The packaging material comprises a base layer of paper or board and polymeric heat-sealable layers on one side of the base layer or, preferably, on both sides thereof. According to the invention, at least two layers of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) with different fractions of ethylene monomer are arranged on the packaging material to provide an oxygen barrier. The layers can locate against each other without a tie layer between them. The heat-sealable polymer can be a polyolefin, and, in addition, other polymeric barrier layers can be incorporated into the material to improve its oxygen, fat and aroma tightness.

  • Publication number: 20120097352
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of treating chemical pulp fibres by a polymerizing hydroxy acid, the fibres thus obtained and the products refined from them. In the method, the hydroxy acid reacts with the reactive groups of the fibres in the presence of a catalyst, forming ester bonds. The following units of the same hydroxy acid are oligomerized and/or polymerized to these grafted acid residues. The fibres thus treated and the products refined thereof endure better processing stages that include drawing and stretching than untreated fibres.

  • Patent number: 8157959
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of manufacturing board (2), a board provided by the method, and a container formed from the same, such as a disposable drinking cup. According to the invention, fiber-based stock is doped with a polymer (6), ending in a pulp web that is formed of this pulp on a board machine wire, and in a board layer (3) that is obtained from the same by pressing and drying. When the board layer is heated, the polymer melts and water vapor bubbles penetrate it, rendering the layer porous. The polymer used for the doping can comprise, for example, a low density polyethylene (LDPE) that has a melt viscosity of about 15. Pore-generating heating can be carried out for the board or only for the container manufactured from it. The porous layer prevents the hot drink enjoyed from the cup from burning the fingers of the user.

  • Publication number: 20120053379
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of producing olefinic monomers for the production of a polymer. The invention particularly relates to the production of tall oil-based biopolymers, such as polyolefins. In the stages of the method bio oil, with a content of over 50% of fatty acids of tall oil and no more than 25% of resin acids of tall oil, and hydrogen gas are fed into a catalyst bed (7); the oil is catalytically deoxygenated in the bed by hydrogen; the flow exiting the bed is cooled down and divided into a hydrocarbon-bearing liquid phase (10) and a gas phase; and the hydrocarbon-bearing liquid (13) is subjected to steam cracking (4) to provide a product containing polymerizing olefins. The deoxygenation in the bed can be followed by a catalytic cracking or, with a suitable catalyst, the deoxygenation and cracking can be simultaneous. The separated hydrogen-bearing gas phase can be circulated in the process.

Abstract: The invention relates to a digital printing method and a paper or board applicable thereto. In digital printing, the surface of a paper or board is charged electrically, toner particles are brought to the surface in an electric field in accordance with the printing, and the particles are melted fast to the surface with the help of heat for forming the printing. According to the invention, the paper or board (2) is provided with a coating layer (3) containing an electrically chargeable acrylate copolymer of ethylene, which receives the toner that is fused to the coating with the help of infrared radiation. Suitable coating polymers are especially methyl, ethyl and butyl acrylate copolymers of ethylene (EMA, EEA and EBA). Especially in packaging boards, besides the digitally printable layer, the polymer coatings can comprise a water vapor or oxygen barrier layer for protecting the packed product, and a heat-sealable layer on the opposite side of the board for sealing the package.

  • Publication number: 20090186135
Abstract: The invention relates to a polymer-coated heat-sealable packaging material, to a heat-sterilised package formed from this and to the use of the packaging material. The material comprises a fibre base 4, which is e.g. a packaging board made of bleached pulp, and polymer heat-seal layers 1, 9 located on both sides of this. In accordance with the invention, the package comprises, outside the fibre base, a polymer coating layer 2, which contains white pigment for covering the fibre base from sight, and a second coating layer 8, which contains light-absorbing pigment. A coating layer pigmented grey inside the fibre base, for instance, provides a light shield for the packaged product. The absorbent black pigment may also be located outside the fibre base underneath a white layer in order to stabilise the brightness of the material. The package may be e.g. a food package heat-sterilised in an autoclave, in which yellowing of the fibre-based material has been avoided by means of a white pigment.

  • Patent number: 7344759
Abstract: Method of manufacturing polymer-coated heat-sealable packaging material and sealed packages (e.g., carton, box, or bag packages for dry and liquid foods). The material includes a fiber base of packaging paper or packaging board, an outer polymeric heat sealing layer such as LDPE, and an inner polymeric water vapor barrier layer which is partly or totally formed of an amorphous cycloolefin copolymer. In the method, the cycloolefin copolymer water vapor barrier and the heat sealing layers are brought onto the fiber base by an extrusion step, and in accordance with the manufacturing method, they can be placed on one side of the fiber base or on both sides of the fiber base for achieving a moisture barrier on both sides of the package. Also, polymeric oxygen barrier layers, such as EVOH or polyamide layers, can be incorporated into the packaging material. By using the cycloolefin copolymer as an extruded water vapor barrier layer, curling of the packaging material is prevented.

  • Patent number: 7335409
Abstract: The invention relates to a manufacturing method of a heat-sealable packaging material, a polymer-coated packaging material manufactured using the method, and a sealed package to be manufactured of the material. The packaging material comprises a fibre base, such as a packaging board (5), and an inner, extruded water vapour barrier layer (2, 9) on both sides, containing high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and an outer heat sealing layer (1, 10), the material of which is, for example, low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Further, polymeric oxygen barrier layers (7) can be incorporated in the packaging material, the material of the oxygen barrier layers being, for example, ethyl vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) or polyamide (PA). With the HDPE layer, the permeation of water vapour is prevented to both directions, and the location of the extruded layers on both sides of the fibre base reduces the curling of the material.

  • Patent number: 7329460
Abstract: The invention relates to a multi-layer heat-sealable packaging material especially for food packages. In addition, objects of the invention are a food package formed of the said packaging material, a method of packaging, and the use of the material for packages. The packaging material (1) comprises a middle layer (3) of fibre material, such as cardboard; at least one polymeric protective layer (4, 5) protecting the product from going bad; and polymeric heat sealing layers (2, 7) preferably on both sides of the packaging material. According to the invention, the heat sealing layer (7) forming the inner surface of the closed package, is blended with light-absorbing pigment, such as carbon black, for protecting the product from visible light. By further blending white pigment, such as titanium dioxide, into the heat sealing layer (7), a grey tint resembling an aluminium foil has been achieved for the layer.
