Abstract: The invention relates to a packaging apparatus for wrapping flat articles, such as books, in a cardboard-made flat package blank, including first flaps remaining on the inside and second flaps remaining on the outside. The packaging apparatus comprises a supply station for package blanks, including alignment and centering elements for a bundle of package blanks and feed means for delivering the blanks from the bundle one by one onto a packaging line, an opening mechanism for the inner flaps of package blanks, a supply station for feeding one or more articles, or a consignment, onto each package blank, means for folding and bending the inner flaps around the consignment means for turning the package blank through 90° relative to its advancing direction, and means for folding and bending the outer flaps around the consignment on top of the inner flaps. The packaging apparatus is provided with first measuring elements capable of measuring the package blank for its width lateral to the travel direction.

Abstract: A book packaging container, comprising four walls (10), a floor (9) and cover flaps (11) which can be folded into a container closing cover after wrapping the books, said walls, floor and cover defining a space having a certain size and shape. The floor (9) of a container or a separate base sheet (3) laid upon the floor of a container is fitted with carton or cardboard flaps (5) whose bases are located adjacent to an edge (13) between the opposite end walls (10) and the floor (9) of a container. The flaps (5) have a length which only slightly less than that of the container, whereby the ends of said flaps (5) can be fastened in an overlapping (7) fashion against each other on top of a bundle of books (6).

Abstract: A book package blank and method and machine for its fabrication by a continuous process. A cardboard web (2) of thin and solid pulp is pulled from a reel. The web is gently corrugated between splined rollers (4) to guide the folding of the cardboard around one or more books. The final separated blank is a rectangular sheet of double layered cardboard having bending lines along its two opposite edges between the two superimposed layers. The layers are attached to each other with the exception of two opposite flaps (17) defined by slits (16) in the topmost layer and detached from the bottom cardboard layer, the width of the flaps corresponding to that of the book(s).
