  • Patent number: 6379714
Abstract: A method for making and identifying processed botanical materials as being of a pharmaceutical grade for use in clinical settings and patient treatment. The method utilizes fingerprints of the processed botanical material with respect to bioactivity and/or composition to establish whether the material meets previously established pharmaceutical grade requirements. The method is applicable to processed botanical materials, such as plant extracts, powders and the like which are used in medicinal applications.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 15, 1996
Date of Patent: April 30, 2002
Assignees: PharmaPrint, Inc., University of Southern California
Inventors: Tasneem A. Khwaja, Elliot P. Friedman
  • Patent number: 6113907
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to St. John's Wort materials and methods for making such materials in medicinally useful and pharmaceutically acceptable forms. More particularly, the present invention relates to the use of compositional and activity fingerprints in the processing of St. John's Wort materials to produce drugs which qualify as pharmaceutical grade compositions which are suitable for use in clinical or veterinary settings to treat and/or ameliorate diseases, disorders or conditions.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 23, 1997
Date of Patent: September 5, 2000
Assignees: University of Southern California, Pharmaprint Inc.
Inventors: Tasneem A. Khwaja, Elliot P. Friedman
  • Patent number: 6039950
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to saw palmetto materials and methods for making such materials in medicinally useful and pharmaceutically acceptable forms. More particularly, the present invention relates to the use of compositional and activity fingerprints in the processing of saw palmetto materials to produce drugs which qualify as pharmaceutical grade compositions which are suitable for use in clinical or veterinary settings to treat and/or ameliorate diseases, disorders or conditions.

  • Patent number: 5780037
Abstract: A method for making and identifying mistletoe extracts as being of a pharmaceutical grade which is useful in treating AIDS, cancers and other diseases where the immune system is suppressed. The method is based on the discovery of five marker proteins which selectively bind with different sugars. Pharmaceutical grade extracts in accordance with the invention require certain concentration levels of each protein. An additional further requirement is that each protein fraction must meet specific bioactivity levels with respect to preventing malignant cell proliferation. Fingerprint markers with respect to viscotoxins and alkaloids present in the extract are also provided. Methods of treatment using the pharmaceutical grade mistletoe are disclosed.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 5, 1997
Date of Patent: July 14, 1998
Assignees: PharmaPrint, Inc., The University of Southern California

  • Patent number: 5565200
Abstract: An aqueous mistletoe extract made from Korean mistletoe. The extract is useful in treating AIDS, cancers and other diseases where the immune system is suppressed. The extract is a pharmaceutical grade extract which has specific levels of lectins, viscotoxins and alkaloidal compounds which combine to provide the observed pharmacological activity. A lectin fingerprint of the extract is also provided.
