Abstract: A working oil accumulated in oil reservoirs is supplied to electric motor cooling oil passages and lubricating oil passages in well-balanced manner all during the time of normal and very low temperatures in an electric drive unit. The electric drive unit comprises an electric motor and a feed oil passage, through which a working oil for cooling and lubrication is supplied to respective mechanisms of a drive unit including the electric motor, in a drive unit body. An oil reservoir communicates with a working oil supply source and is provided in an upper area of the drive unit body. A weir is provided between a first reservoir, which communicates the oil reservoir to the working oil supply source and communicated to small flow-rate discharge oil passages, and a second reservoir communicates with a large flow-rate discharge oil passage.

Abstract: Six embodiments of a cowling assembly for a powerhead of an outboard motor are provided which include a top cover divided into a center cowling emmber, and removable front and rear cowling members, or alternatively, two removable side cowling members. Each of these embodiments provides a cowling assembly which can be easily removed or opened to permit convenient servicing of the engine, and which prevents water from entering into the interior of the cowling. In the first two embodiments, the front and rear cowling members, or alternatively the two side cowling members, are connected to the center cowling member by elastic bands. Instead of using elastic bands, however, third and sixth embodiments of this invention provided a pair of hinges to be used to pivotally connect the front and rear cowling members to the center cowling member at the tops thereof so that the front and rear cowling members or side cowling members can be opened up.

Abstract: A catalytic exhaust system for a marine outboard drive wherein the catalyzer material is supported by a heat conductive bracket and the bracket is cooled by a cooling jacket that is supplied with coolant from the engine cooling jacket. In one embodiment, the water jacket is cooled both internally and externally by delivering water from the cooling jacket into the exhaust system to impinge upon a wall of the cooling jacket.
