  • Publication number: 20120147956
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for performing multi-threaded video decoding are disclosed. The method takes use of a multi-threaded scheme to process an encoded picture stream on a picture by picture basis. In the method, multiple threads are used for performing video decoding at the same time, such as one thread for the operation of parsing input bits into syntax elements of one picture implemented by the first thread, another thread for the operation of decoding the parsed syntax elements of another picture into pixel values implemented by the second thread, and the other threads for the operations of the non-reference picture, such as bidirectional predictive picture, including parsing input bits into syntax elements and the subsequent operation of decoding the parsed syntax elements into pixel values. Therefore, the decoding speed is substantially increased, and the decoding efficiency is enhanced.

  • Publication number: 20100008642
Abstract: A video apparatus and a method of reverse playing video data. The video apparatus includes a controller, a first memory, a second memory, a video decoder, and a display device. The controller obtains a first and second group of pictures (GOP) from a data storage medium. The first memory, coupled to the controller, receives the first GOP. The second memory, coupled to the controller, receives the second GOP. The video decoder, coupled to the first and second memories, decodes video frames in the first and second GOPs. The display device, coupled to the video decoder, displays the decoded video frames. Concurrently, the second memory receives the second GOP, and the video decoder decodes the video frames in the first GOP and then the display device displays the decoded video frames in the first GOP in a reverse playback order.

  • Patent number: 6940907
Abstract: A method for motion estimation. The method includes a) dividing a search area into sub-areas with different densities, b) deriving distortions of a currently selected macro-block and its neighbors determined by the density of the current sub-area, c) if one of the distortions of the neighbors is smallest, identifying the neighbor as the current macro-block, d) repeating steps b) and c) until the current macro-block has the smallest distortion, e) if the current macro-block having the smallest distortion is not located in the sub-area having the largest density, re-defining the search area according to the density of the current sub-area, and f) repeating steps a), b), c), d) and e) until the current macro-block having the smallest distortion is located in the sub-area having the largest density, identified as the reference macro-block.
