Publication number: 20230379625Abstract: Aspects of the subject technology relate to electronic devices having speakers. An electronic device may operate the speaker to generate audio output at one or more resonance frequencies of the speaker and/or the electronic device. This can allow the electronic device to generate particularly loud audio outputs while reducing the power consumption used to generate those audio outputs. In order, for example, to help ensure that the audio output is generated at the resonance frequencies, the electronic device can determine the resonance frequencies prior to generating the audio outputs. For example, the electronic device may determine resonance frequencies by obtaining one or more electrical characteristics of an electronic component while operating the speaker, and determine the resonance frequencies based on the obtained electrical characteristics.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 19, 2023Publication date: November 23, 2023Inventors: David W. ROBISON, Charles C. HOYT, Justin D. CROSBY, Teemu P. SIPILA, Thomas M. JENSEN, Bryce D. WOLFSON

Publication number: 20230379626Abstract: Aspects of the subject technology relate to electronic devices having speakers. An electronic device may operate the speaker at or near one or more resonance frequencies of the speaker and/or the electronic device. This can allow the electronic device to efficiently eject an occlusion when the speaker is occluded by a fluid or other debris. For example, the electronic device may determine a resonance frequency by obtaining one or more electrical characteristics of an electronic component while the speaker is occluded, determine the resonance frequency based on the obtained electrical characteristic(s), and operate the speaker at a frequency that is based on the resonance frequency to eject the occlusion.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 19, 2023Publication date: November 23, 2023Inventors: Yang LIU, Ashwat Kandasamy AMIRTHALINGAM, Onur I. ILKORUR, Thomas M. JENSEN, Oliver LEONHARDT, David W. ROBISON, Teemu P. SIPILA

Patent number: 10674254Abstract: A portable electronic device includes a housing that at least partially defines an internal volume. The portable electronic device further includes a cover secured to the housing and that is and capable of enclosing the internal volume. The cover having a cover opening capable of passing an audible sound provided by an audio module located within the internal volume. The audible sound passing from the audio module to the cover opening along an audible sound path. The portable electronic device further includes a bracket assembly positioned in the internal volume and having: (i) a bracket opening that is aligned with and between the audio module with the cover opening, and (ii) a fin element that spans the bracket opening, the fin element having at least a portion positioned within the audible sound path.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 2019Date of Patent: June 2, 2020Assignee: APPLE INC.Inventors: Tyler B. Cater, Mu-Hua Cheng, Teemu P. Sipila

Patent number: 10271127Abstract: This disclosure describes a speaker assembly suitable for use in a portable electronic device utilizing water resistant ports. The speaker assembly can have an open back that subjects a back volume of the speaker to pressure differentials within a device housing of the portable electronic device. The speaker assembly can utilize a speaker surround having a varying thickness. The varying thickness speaker surround allows the speaker to maintain an acceptable frequency response profile while limiting the travel of the diaphragm it is coupled with. The disclosure also describes how electrically conductive pathways can be integrated within a housing of the speaker assembly.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2017Date of Patent: April 23, 2019Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: David A. Hurrell, Tyler B. Cater, Scott P. Porter, Salome Bavetta, Anthony P. Grazian, Benjamin J. Pope, Scott A. Myers, Ashutosh Y. Shukla, Benjamin M. Russo, Christopher Wilk, David MacNeil, Eric N. Nyland, Ihtesham H. Chowdhury, Joseph F. Maldonado, Kevin M. Froese, Richard Hung Minh Dinh, Ruchir M. Dave, Teemu P. Sipila, Yang Liu

Patent number: 9820038Abstract: A waterproof speaker module may include a membrane formed from at least one waterproof and elastic material and a supporting structure. The membrane may include an outer surface, an inner surface, and at least one concave region that is indented toward the inner surface. The supporting structure may be coupled to the membrane and include a support structure that mates with the concave region of the membrane when the speaker is subjected to a hydrostatic load. When the speaker is not subjected to a hydrostatic load, the support structure may contact the concave region. In this way, the membrane may be resistant to tearing or rupture due to hydrostatic load.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2013Date of Patent: November 14, 2017Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Alexander V. Salvatti, Andrew Bright, Christopher Wilk, Justin D. Crosby, Nikolas T. Vitt, Pablo Seoane Vieites, Ruchir M. Dave, Samuel Bruce Weiss, Teemu P. Sipila
