  • Publication number: 20030217206
Abstract: A portable memory device is provided that is capable of easy connection to a personal computer via a universal serial bus (USB) port, IEEE 1394 (i.e., firewire) or similar port. Included in the portable memory device is a compression/decompression engine capable of compressing and decompressing data. Data residing on a personal computer or other host platform is compressed by the engine and saved to the memory of the portable memory device. Compressed data is retrieved and decompressed by the engine and transmitted to the personal computer for use by the user. Embodiments of the present invention thus provide a highly convenient system and apparatus for users to access and save larger quantities of data to a relatively small device.

  • Publication number: 20030174167
Abstract: A portable memory device is provided that is capable of easy connection to a personal computer via a universal serial bus (USB) port or similar port (i.e., firewire). Stored to the memory of the device are an email program and certain information necessary to access an email account (i.e., email account username and password, post office protocol (POP) and simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) information). Email is accessed by connecting the portable memory device to a personal computer that is connected to a network and executing the email program residing on the portable memory device. Embodiments of the present invention thus provide a highly convenient, secure system and apparatus for users to access, view, save, send and transport electronic communications.

  • Publication number: 20030149816
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for capturing image and/or audio data, processing the image and/or audio data, and storing the processed image and/or audio data. The system includes a portable device having a digital camera for capturing the image and/or audio data, an integrated circuit having a microprocessor for processing the image and/or audio data and a non-volatile memory for storing the processed image and/or audio data. As part of the processing operation in a preferred embodiment, the data is converted into a standard file format that is compatible and recognizable by the host platform to which the portable device may be coupled. After conversion into a standard file format, the data may either be stored in the non-volatile memory, or uploaded directly to the host platform.

  • Publication number: 20030005337
Abstract: Apparatus and method for implementing biometrics-based authentication. In a preferred embodiment, the present invention is embodied in a portable device. Specifically, in one embodiment, the portable device includes a microprocessor, a non-volatile memory coupled thereto, and a biometrics-based authentication module controlled by the microprocessor. Preferably, the biometrics technology used is fingerprint authentication technology. The authentication module is capable of registering a fingerprint upon first use of the portable device, storing an encoded version of the fingerprint in the non-volatile memory. Subsequently, the authentication module can read a person's fingerprint and reliably determine whether the fingerprint matches the registered fingerprint stored in the non-volatile memory. If a match is found, access to information in the non-volatile memory is granted to that person; otherwise, access is denied.

  • Publication number: 20030005336
Abstract: Apparatus and method for implementing biometrics-based access control to a restricted resource. In a preferred embodiment, the present invention is realized using a portable device. If a match is found, access to the restricted resource is granted to that person; otherwise, access is denied.
