  • Patent number: 10722247
Abstract: An apparatus and method for introducing portals into bone is described herein. An example apparatus for introducing portals into bone includes a handle, a base, and a driving member. The driving member can be made to project past the base by operating the handle. The base is detachable from the handle. The apparatus also includes a guide coupled at a first end to the handle and at a second end to the base. The base is detachably coupled to the guide. A base coupling detachably coupling the base to the guide includes an actuating member movable between a coupled configuration wherein the base is coupled to the guide and an uncoupled configuration wherein the base is released from the guide. The actuating member is arranged so that motion of the handle toward the base moves the actuating member from the coupled configuration to the uncoupled configuration.

  • Publication number: 20180221611
Abstract: Patients undergoing general anesthetics frequently experience emergence clenching where the patient may bite onto their breathing tube and may clench their teeth. These activities lead to dental damage and negative pressure pulmonary edema. The invention of this patent is a simpler, better bite block that may be used to prevent these injuries. The bite block presented comprises a deformable material used as a core around which a bite-resistant material is wrapped to prevent damage to the core by patient biting. The bite-resistant material may be formed into a distal tail that the user can pull to retain or retrieve the device. It may also have a patch of adhesive to attach the bite block to locations including the patient, the surgical drapes and the patient's breathing airway, and thereby prevent loss of the bite block.

  • Publication number: 20140196721
Abstract: Under- and overinflation of retention balloons and cuffs for catheters including Foley catheters, and for endotracheal tubes, tracheostomy tubes, laryngeal mask airways and similar devices is correlated with hospital acquired infections and with patient injury. In this patent, a solution that correctly inflates inflatable retention devices is taught, whereby a pressure release means is incorporated into the inflation pathway from the fluid input syringe to the retention means while inflating. This pressure release means can be set to open at or near the optimal fluid pressure so that overinflation can be prevented by releasing any pressure above the optimal pressure and underinflation can be prevented by a user pressurizing the cuff until the valve is noticed to open. As well, observation of fluid leaked through the pressure relief means can indicate misplacement of the retention means, allowing the user to reposition it before patient injury occurs.

Abstract: Improved sensors and sensing methods for detection of Neuromuscular Blockade (NMB), for example to improve monitoring generally, as well as facilitate automated NMB drug administration. The methods, systems, devices, etc., herein can increase the quantity and quality of data available. The methods, etc., include translation between commonly available sensing types, use of partially saturated sensor measurements, use of a model of neurotransmitter storage and release and sophisticated use of more than one sensor simultaneously. These methods are aided by new sensors and methods of decreasing electrical noise. An implementation of the methods, systems, devices, etc., herein is automated drug delivery for NMB, whether through an advisor system or through with full computer control.

  • Patent number: 8562615
Abstract: An apparatus for introducing a bone portal into a bone is described herein. An example apparatus for introducing portals into bone includes a stylet and a handle. The stylet is configured to support an infusion tube assembly. The infusion tube assembly comprises a bone portal. The handle is drivingly coupled to the stylet by a release mechanism. The release mechanism comprises a bone probe that, in a first configuration, extends generally parallel to the stylet. The release mechanism is operative to uncouple the driving coupling between the handle and the stylet upon axial motion of the bone probe relative to the handle. The stylet and bone probe are movable apart from one another to a second configuration.

  • Patent number: 8480672
Abstract: Some introducer tools for bone portals have a handle coupled to a driving member by a force-limiting coupling. A bone portal comprising a bone-penetrating portion and a bone stop may be driven to a desired depth in bone when the force-limiting coupling allows application of force to the bone portal that is sufficient to drive the bone-penetrating portion of the portal into the bone but not sufficient to drive the bone stop significantly into the bone. Bone portals of various types are described herein. Various configurations for stylets suitable for use in introducing bone portals or otherwise penetrating bone and methods for inserting bone portals are also described herein.

  • Patent number: 8229872
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to methods of modeling and handling of nonlinearities for application of automatic control to systems with high inter-process variance and nonlinearities. The variance and nonlinearities make these systems difficult to control. Variance is accounted for by replacing the mathematical model of the system with a more representative model from a modelset that may or may not be chosen based on characteristics of the system under test, and then adapting using recursive estimation techniques. Nonlinearities defined by threshold to response and maximal responses are incorporated into linear models relating accumulated inputs to response. Example implementations in relation to automated drug delivery for neuromuscular blocking drugs through warning, advisory and closed-loop control systems are discussed.
