  • Patent number: 6950655
Abstract: A method and system wherein handover information is broadcast in a wireless local area network. Handover information is broadcast in a beacon frame thereby allowing WTRUs operating in a wireless area network to handover to available alternative systems as desired. WTRUs may read the beacon frame and obtain appropriate information for handing over to alternative systems having coverage areas that overlap that of the wireless local area network. The alternative systems may be any type of wireless system and the wireless local area network may be any type of wireless area network.

  • Publication number: 20050157676
Abstract: An improved method of network management, particularly in the context of standards IEEE802.11 and IEEE802.11k, through two new MAC measurements, with attendant advantages. The two new measurements include WTRU uplink traffic loading measurement, and an AP service loading measurement and is generally applicable at least to layers 1 and 2 as applied to a least 802.11k in the context of OFDM and CDMA 2000 systems, but is applicable to other scenarios as well. A Method for determining and advertising congestion is also provided for a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) system. The present invention also introduces a method for managing congestion when congestion is detected. This aspect of the present invention applies primarily to wireless systems that use the Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) mechanism. The methods are advantageously implemented in selectively configured WTRUs of various forms.

  • Publication number: 20050147041
Abstract: A method for managing quality of service (QoS) in a wireless local area network begins by receiving a traffic flow. The traffic flow is mapped to a traffic class (TC), based on QoS requirements of the traffic flow. A transmission budget of an access class (AC) is calculated, each AC including at least one TC. A determination is made whether the traffic flow can be admitted, by calculating whether the transmission budget can support the traffic flow. If the traffic flow is admitted, the parameters of the TC are adjusted and collisions in the TC between existing traffic flows and the newly admitted traffic flow are managed.

  • Publication number: 20050143119
Abstract: Method and apparatus employed by wireless network components such as access points (APs) for controlling transmitting power level of individual wireless transmitter/receiver units (WTRUs) by establishing a power transmit level based on prior transmit and receiving transmission and reception statistics such as signal to noise ratio (SNR), bit error rate (BER), frame error rate (FER) and/or the like. Power transmit level information is preferably communicated through any one of a clear to send (CTS), request to send (RTS), data and acknowledge (ACK) frame. Alternatively the power control information may be inserted into a beacon frame or an individual control frame specifically designated for power control. The WTRUs preferably have battery level sensors and adjust power control level responsive to a sensed battery level. Alternatively, the APs and WTRUs may reverse roles and the WTRUs may provide power transmit level information to an AP to facilitate transmissions by the AP.

  • Publication number: 20050141450
Abstract: The present invention integrates resource allocation between time division duplex (TDD) and frequency division duplex (FDD) in wireless communication systems. A radio network controller (RNC) receives a radio access bearer (RAB) request from a core network or a wireless receive/transmit unit. The RNC utilizes a TDD-FDD selector to assign radio resources in response to the request. The TDD-FDD selector evaluates various parameters regarding the received RAB request and determines whether it is preferable to assign TDD resources or FDD resources and whether such resources are currently available. Once resources are assigned, system conditions are evaluated to determine whether optimizations may be made to a current resource allocation.

  • Publication number: 20050124335
Abstract: A startup process of an access point (AP) includes a discovery phase and an announcement phase. During the discovery phase, the AP detects neighboring APs from its own extended service set (ESS), neighboring APs from different ESSs, and external sources of interference. During the announcement phase, the AP transmits its beacon signals at maximum power in order to accelerate recognition by neighboring APs running the discovery phase. An automatic initialization channel selection process of an AP scans channels the AP will use to communicate. Information of each scanned channel is recorded and a best performance channel is determined for use by the AP.

  • Publication number: 20050111403
Abstract: A method and wireless communication system for transferring management information. The system includes at least one access point (AP) including a first management entity and a second management entity, and at least one wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) including a third management entity and a fourth management entity. The AP transmits a management information base (MIB) information request action frame including a category field and an action details field to the WTRU. In response to receiving the information request action frame, the WTRU determines whether or not to provide management information to the AP. When the WTRU provides management information to the AP, the WTRU compiles management information stored in a MIB located in the WTRU and transmits a MIB information report action frame to the AP. The MIB lists a plurality of tables containing information associated with radio resource management (RRM) and at least one table containing physical layer measurements.

  • Publication number: 20050094607
Abstract: In a wireless communication system including an access point and at least one wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), a method for adaptive radio resource management begins by examining a frame error rate value of a WTRU. Then, a channel utilization value of the WTRU and a current data rate of the WTRU are examined. System parameters for the WTRU are adjusted based on the examined variables.

  • Publication number: 20050094663
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for providing intelligent remote access to wireless transmit/receive units (WTRUs). A translator is provided in base stations so that system controllers may issue application level network management protocol messages to base stations. The messages are transmitted by the translator to a medium access control (MAC) messaging protocol and forwarded to WTRUs. Information provided by WTRUs to base stations is translated from a MAC protocol to an application level network management protocol so that the information may be accessed by system controllers using application level network management protocols.

  • Publication number: 20050059422
Abstract: A method and wireless communication system for requesting and obtaining transmit power control (TPC) information. The system includes at least one access point (AP) and at least one wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU). When the AP decides to adapt the transmit power level of the WTRU, the AP transmits a TPC request frame to the WTRU. In response to receiving the TPC request frame, the WTRU performs one or more physical measurements and sends a TPC report frame back to the AP.

  • Publication number: 20050058062
Abstract: A wireless local area network (WLAN) includes a station, an access point (AP), and a network management entity (NME). A method for remote radio resource management in the WLAN begins by configuring a trigger condition at the AP. • Publication number: 20040092232
Abstract: A correct escape mechanism is determined according to interference type. Transmission is arranged so that interference may be measured at all time slots as needed to compute a measure of variance in interference in time slots. If the variance is above a predetermined value, time division duplex escape mechanisms are employed. If the variance is below a predetermined value, appropriate escape mechanisms are employed depending on whether the escape mechanism is being implemented during an uplink or downlink. Interference causing FDD WTUs may be handed over to carrier bands to control interference experienced by TDD users.
