Patent number: 8457610Abstract: There is disclosed a system and method for automatically drafting blog entries. In an embodiment, the method comprises: defining a triggering event for generating a draft blog entry; detecting the triggering event; and upon detection of the triggering event, automatically generating a draft a blog entry in a predetermined format. The triggering event may comprise, for example, capturing an image, video clip, sound clip, or browsing a webpage having a URL on the wireless mobile device, and the method may further comprise automatically inserting the captured image, video clip, sound clip, or URL into the draft blog entry in the predetermined format together with automatically generated text. Some of the text may be generated in dependence upon the triggering event.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2012Date of Patent: June 4, 2013Assignee: Research In Motion LimitedInventors: Gerhard Dietrich Klassen, Brandon James Dehart, Terrill Mark Dent

Publication number: 20130090097Abstract: Methods and devices are provided for generating and publishing multi-media information associated with actions performed on a mobile communication device. A publishing application monitors actions performed on the mobile communication device and enables selection of at least one of the actions. Content associated with selected actions may be stored and data associated with at least one of the selected actions and the content associated with at least one selected action may be extracted. The multi-media information may be displayed on a graphical user interface in a pre-selected format, such as a chronologically arranged list. Users may preview and modify the multi-media information before publication through a pre-selected communication service. The multi-media information may be published by selecting an icon, including an image identifying the pre-selected communication service.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 10, 2011Publication date: April 11, 2013Applicant: RESEARCH IN MOTION LIMITEDInventors: Gerhard Dietrich Klassen, Terrill Mark Dent

Publication number: 20130013875Abstract: Described herein are a method, system, and computer readable medium for automatically saving a file. A save score for the file is determined and compared against a save threshold. The save score is determined from a combination of autosave indicators indicative of whether to immediately autosave the file. Each of the autosave indicators that adjust the save score increases or decreases the likelihood that the file will be automatically saved. If the comparison indicates that the file should be automatically saved, the file is automatically saved; otherwise, the file is not automatically saved. The save score can take into consideration factors such as the number of dirty characters in the file and the time at which the file was last saved. Utilizing the save score reduces the number of saves performed when only immaterial changes have been made to the file, which helps preserve system resources such as battery life.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 5, 2011Publication date: January 10, 2013Applicant: Research In Motion LimitedInventors: David Andrew Brown, Michael Stephen Brown, Terrill Mark Dent

Patent number: 8342406Abstract: A system and method are provided for transferring data to a mobile device through animated barcodes. The mobile device scans, with a barcode reader, at least a first barcode and then scans at least a second barcode, whereby the barcodes are shown on a display. The display is in an open-loop relationship with the mobile device. The mobile device decodes the at least first and second barcodes to extract a first data portion and an associated first sequence identification, and a second data portion and an associated second sequence identification. The mobile device combines the first and second data portions according to the associated sequence identifications.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 2010Date of Patent: January 1, 2013Assignee: Research In Motion LimitedInventors: Christopher O'Byrne Saunders, Terrill Mark Dent

Publication number: 20120311020Abstract: A method executed on a first electronic device for accessing an application server on a second electronic device includes receiving a cache manifest for an application, the cache manifest identifying a resource item that can be pre-cached on the first electronic device, pre-caching the resource item as a cached resource item in a cache memory of the first electronic device prior to launching an application client on the first electronic device. The method further includes, upon launching the application client on the first electronic device, retrieving data from the application server, wherein the data includes content and a reference to the resource item, obtaining, from the cache memory, the cached resource item that corresponds to the resource item, and displaying an output based upon the content and the cached resource item.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 3, 2011Publication date: December 6, 2012Applicant: RESEARCH IN MOTION LIMITEDInventors: Michael Stephen BROWN, Herbert Anthony LITTLE, Terrill Mark DENT

Publication number: 20120147246Abstract: Techniques for use in an electronic device which includes a camera module for producing photographic images are described. An input request for capturing a photographic image is detected via a user interface of the electronic device. In response to detecting the input request, a photographic image is captured via the camera lens using the camera module, and the captured photographic image is produced in a visual display. In addition, a zoomed-in portion of the image is produced in the visual display, simultaneously with the display of the image. The zoomed-in portion of the image may be a picture-in-picture (PIP) window or virtual magnifying glass window overlaid with the image, for example. The image may include a blur characteristic which is only visually apparent from the zoomed-in portion of the image, in which case the image may be manually deleted by the user so that another photographic image may be captured.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 13, 2010Publication date: June 14, 2012Applicant: RESEARCH IN MOTION LIMITEDInventors: Terrill Mark Dent, Michael Stephen Brown, Carl Edward Lucas
