    Abstract: Various embodiments, methods, and systems for erasure coding with overlapped local reconstruction codes, are provided. An erasure coding scheme can be defined based on Overlapped Local Reconstruction Codes (OLRC) that achieve high storage efficiency by providing fault tolerance properties that optimize reconstruction for common cases of failures while maintaining the reconstruction costs for uncommon case of failures. In operation, a data chunk is divided into data fragments. The data fragments correspond to zones. A plurality of parity fragments is computed using the data fragments. A parity fragment is computed using a subset of the data fragments. The plurality of parity fragments are assigned to the zones comprising the data fragments, where the data fragments and the plurality of parity fragments define overlapped local construction codes having a plurality of local groups. An unavailable data fragment is recoverable from at least two local groups from the plurality of local groups.

    Abstract: Approaches for securing a persistent storage medium of a computer system. A computer system is instructed to transition from a sleep state to a working state. In response, a storage medium access module obtains, from a user of the computer system, an authentication credential required to access a persistent storage medium of the computer system. Upon successful validation of the authentication credential, the storage medium access module causes the computer system to transition from the sleep state to the working state. Upon being unable to successfully validate the authentication credential, the storage medium access module causing the computer system to remain in the sleep state.

    Abstract: A hardness adjustable platform for supporting a conveyor belt of a treadmill includes a platform body having internal spaces, and a plurality of elastic fillers moveably and respectively disposed in the internal spaces of the platform body for providing a cushion effect. The fillers are moveable relative to the platform body by an external force and divide the platform body into first and second regions having different hardness. As a result, the runner who uses the treadmill equipped with the aforesaid platform may adjust the positions of the fillers according to his/her physical condition and running speed to change the hardness distribution of the platform so as to enhance his/her running efficiency and reduce the risk of exercise injury.

    Abstract: A method of manufacturing a cylindrical shaped capacitor includes the steps of providing a substrate that already has a polysilicon plug and a word line formed thereon, and then forming an insulation layer and a first dielectric layer over the substrate. Thereafter, the first dielectric layer is patterned to form an opening. Then, a first conductive layer and a second dielectric layer are deposited in sequence over the first dielectric layer and the opening. Next, the first conductive layer and the second dielectric layer are etched back to form spacers on the sidewalls of the opening. Subsequently, etching is carried out down through the opening using the sidewall spacers as a mask until the polysilicon plug is exposed. After that, a second conductive layer is formed over entire substrate, and then the second conductive layer is etched back so that only a portion of the second conductive layer and the first conductive layer remain.
