  • Patent number: 5718947
Abstract: Non-evaporative processes for coating ion-containing polymers onto selected substrates and the articles made thereby, which processes fundamentally comprise contacting a substrate with a dispersion or solution of an ion-containing polymer and especially a solventless dispersion of a perfluorosulfonic acid ionomer, and thereafter contacting the dispersion- or solution-wetted substrate with a solution of a salt or of a strongly ionizing acid of a sufficient concentration to cause an adherent coating of the ion-containing polymer to be formed on the substrate.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 20, 1995
Date of Patent: February 17, 1998
    Assignee: The Dow ChemicalCompany
Inventors: Charles W. Martin, Stan H. Baker, Terry D. Gordon, Melisa Davila
  • Patent number: 5716680
Abstract: A novel, improved process for forming a thin, adherent coating of a perfluorocarbon ionomer on a polymeric substrate which is typically in powdered form, fibrous form, or a mixture of powdered and fibrous forms, from a colloidal dispersion of the perfluorocarbon ionomer in a liquid medium which consists essentially of water and is substantially free of organic solvents, comprising adding a) the colloidal dispersion and b) a salt or a strongly ionizing acid to a vessel containing the polymeric substrate, and subjecting the dispersion, salt or acid and polymeric material to high shear conditions whereby a thin, durable coating of the perfluorocarbon ionomer is formed on the polymeric substrate.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 1, 1996
Date of Patent: February 10, 1998
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
Inventors: Charles W. Martin, Stan H. Baker, Terry D. Gordon, Melisa Davila, Paul R. Peters, John P. McGraw, Jr.
  • Patent number: 4741744
Abstract: The invention relates to a process of separating gases using a membrane fabricated from a polymer containing a perfluorinated backbone and pendant hydrated metal ionomer groups wherein the pendant hydrated metal ionomer groups contain cations of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, or transition metals bound to SO.sub.3.sup.-. The hydrated membranes have improved gas permeabilities with comparable gas selectivities over the unhydrated membranes. The membranes may be used to separate gas mixtures containing such gases as carbon dioxide and methane.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: May 3, 1988
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
Inventors: Marinda L. Wu, Terry D. Gordon, Charles W. Martin
