Abstract: A method for electronically providing material to a user such that the user can receive, and preferably transmit, editorial content linked to a selectable portion of the material enables a user to have access to material electronically distributed over a communication network, such as the Internet. In one implementation a Web application displays the contents of a book in a browser-based reader and an indication of the amount of commentary associated with selectable portions of the book. A user can select portions of the book and associate media of different formats such as audio, video, image, URLs, in addition to text, with the selected portion(s) of the book. A user can also see a list of associated content contributed by herself/himself or by other users (unless optionally designated private). By choosing any item in the list of associated content, the content is dynamically displayed within the user's reader.
