  • Patent number: 8504430
Abstract: A system and method of displaying information by an electronic price label which uses thresholds to minimize the number of messages to an electronic price label. The system includes a record for an item associated with the electronic price label which contains the thresholds. The thresholds divide the information into a number of ranges including a first range of information and a second range of information.

  • Patent number: 7080028
Abstract: Techniques for displaying promotional information by providing an electronic sign (ES) which displays promotional information, display slogans, bundled pricing, bulk pricing, and other types of information. The ES can be used by retailers to increase sales, provide an alternate technique for advertising and reduce costs. According to one aspect, an EPL computer reads an EPL/ES data file to determine if an entry is associated with an EPL or an ES. The EPL computer then reads a promotional message from a promotional data file. An index in the EPL/ES data file may be used to determine the correct promotional message. The EPL computer transmits a message to the ES which includes a command for the ES to display the promotional message. The ES then displays the promotional message, providing valuable information to customers who are in the process of making purchasing decisions. In one aspect, an ES displays promotional information associated with an offer and is not associated with any particular single item.

  • Patent number: 6876975
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for handling alternate information on electronic price labels. The system uses a price look-up file reader to determine the presence or absence of alternate data in a price look-up file. If alternate data are present for a merchandise item, the price look-up file reader generates an alternate message to be displayed by the electronic price label, in lieu of the item's unit price. The system includes a computer which maintains a first data file containing item identifiers for items associated with electronic price labels, and which determines the presence or absence, in such first data file, of alternate data, to be displayed by an electronic price label in lieu of an item's unit price. If alternate data are present, the system transmits messages to the electronic price labels containing the alternate messages and a command to display the alternate messages in lieu of unit price information.

  • Publication number: 20040267699
Abstract: A system and method of managing data for electronic price label overlays which automates printing of new and changed overlays. The method determines electronic price label information and price look-up file descriptions that have been added or changed for particular electronic price labels. Additions and changes in overlay data are marked and identified by the marks to create a print data file. Alternatively, additions and changes are identified by a comparison of a first file with a second file containing the additions and changes. The system includes a number of storage media for storing the PLU file and the EPL data file, and a computer which determines a change in the PLU file or the EPL data file and which creates the print file for printing an overlay for the change in the PLU file and EPL data file.

  • Patent number: 6764002
Abstract: A system for displaying price information for a random weight item which detects the random weight item and instructs an electronic price label to only display unit price information for the random weight item. The system includes a computer system coupled to the electronic price label, including a terminal and a storage medium coupled to the terminal. The storage medium contains an electronic price label data file, which contains identification information for an item. The computer terminal reads the electronic price label data file to obtain the identification information for the item, determines from the identification information whether the item is the random weight item, and, if the item is the random weight item, sends a message to the electronic price label instructing the electronic price label to display only unit price information.

  • Patent number: 6724318
Abstract: An electronic price label locator which uses signal strength and noise level information associated with signals from the electronic price label. The locator includes an input device which records identification information distinguishing the electronic price label from other electronic price labels. A receiver receives signals from the electronic price label. Signal strength and noise level determining circuitry measures signal strengths and noise levels associated with the signals. Processing circuitry determines a direction to the electronic price label. Finally, a display displays the direction. The locator may also be portable and include a hand-held housing.

  • Patent number: 6696920
Abstract: A method of changing a display sequence of an electronic price label which uses two commands to add and remove information from a display sequence. The method includes the steps of formulating a change sequence message including a number of change sequence commands which reference memory registers of the electronic price label, and sending the change sequence message to the electronic price label. An Add command causes the electronic price label to additionally display data in a predetermined memory register. A Remove command causes the electronic price label to stop displaying data in a predetermined memory register. If data accompanies an Add command, the method further determines whether such data will overwrite existing data in the predetermined memory register, and if it will, stores the existing data for later retrieval.

  • Patent number: 6542873
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for using an enhanced external data interface to display data in electronic price label (EPL) systems. The enhanced external data interface (EDI) responds to various stimuli or requests, such as a store manager or other user logged onto a computer terminal in real time, computer-generated applications and timed file data. The enhanced EDI may receive messages to store first information in, or to read first information already stored in, an EPL data file. The EDI determines whether it is time to update a message displayed by a particular EPL or group thereof for a particular merchandise item. If it is time to update the message, the EDI compares information read from the EPL data file with information about the same merchandise item stored in a message management file.

  • Patent number: 6496805
Abstract: A method of temporarily displaying information by an electronic price label which avoids resending previously-displayed information. The method implemented by the electronic price label includes receiving a first message containing a first command to display first contents of a first memory area identified by a first memory locator, storing a second memory locator identifying a second memory area containing second memory contents currently being displayed in a third memory area, receiving a second message containing a second command to redisplay the second contents of the second memory area, reading the second memory locator from the third memory area, reading the second memory contents from the second memory area, and displaying the second memory contents.

  • Patent number: 6360207
Abstract: A system and method of consolidating information for display which relies on codes. The system includes a database including a plurality of types of information besides price to be displayed by an electronic price label and a computer. The computer schedules messages for transmission to the electronic price label, including a message containing the information. The computer identifies a number of the types of information to be displayed by the electronic price label, obtains the number of the types of information from the database, determines parameters for storing and displaying the number of types of information, and creates a code incorporating the number of types of information and the parameters for storing and displaying the number of types of information.

  • Publication number: 20020004750
Abstract: An electronic price label (EPL) system which is capable of simultaneously displaying price information in a plurality of different currencies. The system includes an EPL and a computer. The EPL includes a display having first and second portions, and a control circuit which causes the display to simultaneously display price information in a plurality of different currencies. The computer sends messages to the EPL instructing the EPL to display primary currency price information in the first portion of the display and secondary currency price information in the second portion of the display.

  • Patent number: 6317724
Abstract: A temporary display sequence change method which keeps track of replaced data. A first sequence for displaying first pieces of information by an EPL is determined. A second sequence by which the EPL currently displays second pieces of information is determined. If at least one of the pieces of first information is different from the pieces of second information, whether the one piece replaces another piece of second information is determined. If the one piece does not replace the other piece, the one piece of information is obtained. If the one piece does replace the other piece, the one piece of information is obtained and the other piece and its memory location are stored. A first change sequence message including the one piece of information is sent. The first pieces of information are displayed in accordance with the first sequence for a predetermined time period.

  • Patent number: 6073843
Abstract: An electronic price label (EPL) price verification system which ensures that a price for an item obtained from a price look-up (PLU) file by a bar code scanner is equal to another price displayed by an electronic price label (EPL) for the item. The EPL price verification system includes a computer system coupled to the EPL, which includes a terminal and a storage medium coupled to the terminal. The storage medium contains an EPL data file, which contains EPL identification information and an EPL price verifier. The computer terminal executes a price verification program which reads the PLU file to obtain the price of the item, calculates another price verifier from the price of the item in the price file, reads EPL data file to obtain the one price verifier, compares the one and the other price verifiers to determine whether they are equal, and changes the displayed price to the price in the PLU file if the one and the other price verifiers are different.
