    Abstract: A method and system for dynamically controlling a voice-processing mechanism in a voice command platform. The platform receives a specification during a voice command session with a user and responsively sets a mode of operation of the voice-processing mechanism. The platform can receive the specification from various sources, such as a user (e.g., as a voice command), a stored user profile record, a voice command application and/or another stored table or data source. Example modes of operation include (i) use of a designated text-to-speech engine from among multiple text-to-speech engines, (ii) use of a designated voice prompt store from among multiple voice prompt stores, (iii) muting of a speech recognition engine, and (iv) selection of a secondary phoneme dictionary for use in recognizing phonemes in incoming speech signals.

    Abstract: A wireless instant messaging system is disclosed. A mobile station (MS), such as a cellular telephone for instance, may be registered with an instant messaging (IM) server as being available to receive instant messages via an IM proxy. A user at an IM client terminal may then send an instant message destined for a user at the MS. The IM server may direct the message to a service node (SN), which may convert the message into an industry standard SMS message and send the SMS message to the MS. At the MS, a user may read the SMS message and engage a callback feature, which will establish a dial-up voice connection between the MS and the SN. The user at the MS may then speak an instant message response, and the SN may record the response as a compressed audio file. The SN may then send the compressed audio file as an attachment to an instant message back to the user at the IM client terminal. The IM client terminal may then play the spoken response message.

    Abstract: A system is disclosed which includes a transmissive liquid crystal display of the type which may display a line of characters or symbols at a time, or which may display only a raster line in combination with an energy source and a controllable and transportable medium. The medium is exposed by energy from the source of energy passing through the liquid crystal display which acts as a mask for the source of energy. The liquid crystal display may be set by electrical signals manually generated such as by a keyboard or by signals automatically generated by use of other electronic equipment. In one alternate embodiment of the invention a large area two-dimensional liquid crystal display is used as a mask. In another embodiment of the invention a liquid crystal display is used as a mask for the purpose of exposing a photoconductive drum of the type used in xerography. A reflective liquid crystal display is disclosed in yet another embodiment of the invention.
