  • Patent number: 8117518
Abstract: In a data recovery processing, the conventional overhead, primarily, latency due to a rotational recording media is removed. Secondary, in a signal processing or in a recording and reproducing apparatus, reliability of data reproduction is improved by repeatedly processing data. These processing are achieved that input signal, i.e., raw analog signal read from the recording media is digitized to be stored in a secondary storage such as a memory or a FIFO memory. The apparatus includes a signal processing circuit to repeatedly process the stored digital signal in the secondary storage. When detecting data, operation of the circuit is efficiently controlled by a change over detector parameters, in which characteristics for the detecting performance. • Patent number: 8089717
Abstract: When the format control circuit detects bit synchronization information in a sector to be reproduced on a magnetic disk, the format control circuit activates a read gate signal for commanding to read out the sector from the magnetic disk. When symbol synchronization information on the magnetic disk is detected, a SYNC detection circuit produces a synchronization information detection signal. The format control circuit calculates an end position of the sector on the magnetic disk on the basis of the synchronization information detection signal to inactivate the read gate signal. The data correction circuit and the decoding circuit reproduce data and ECC in the sector read out from the magnetic disk during the period that the read gate signal is active on the basis of the synchronization information detection signal to produce the data and ECC to a data bus.

  • Patent number: 7612960
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention efficiently format long sectors, without decreasing the performance, in a magnetic disk drive in which servo sectors are radially formed at regular intervals, and make full use of the ECC performance that is enhanced by the long sectors. In one embodiment, a data format in each zone on a magnetic disk is completed by a plurality of tracks N (N is an integer, which is 2 or more). The storage capacity per track of the outermost radius zone Z#1 is 150 kB. In this zone, long sectors each having a length of 32 kB are formatted with the number of tracks per format N#1=3. The storage capacity per track of the innermost radius zone Z#m is 80 kB. In this zone, long sectors each having a length of 32 kB are formatted with the number of tracks per format N#m=2.

  • Publication number: 20090015960
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention increase the convenience of a magnetic disk drive for portable use by shortening a period of time required to record a large amount of data, and by increasing the reproduction time, in the magnetic disk drive. In one embodiment, an area between servo data parts is interpolated by servo data parts, each of which stores a burst signal, so that the allocation density of a burst signal is made k times. At the time of write operation in which data is written, only the servo data parts are made use of to perform the servo control while a disk is driven at high rotational speed so as to reduce the recording time. At the time of read operation in which data is reproduced, the servo data parts are made use of to ensure the required precision of the servo control at low rotational speed that is 1/k of the rotational speed at the time of write operation. The reproduction at low rotational speed enables the reduction in power consumption.

  • Patent number: 7372656
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide a disk drive that is capable of effectively controlling a side erase, which is one of the problems with the use of the perpendicular recording technology. In one embodiment, tracks on a recording medium are formed concentrically or spirally by overwriting a primary side track, which is either an inner track or outer track, onto part of a secondary side track, which is on the side away from the primary side track. A head unit is installed so that a magnetic head positioned at one end of the head unit relatively may move over the recording medium and that the yaw angle prevailing at an end track of the primary side on the recording medium may be substantially zero.

  • Patent number: 7296215
Abstract: In one embodiment, a symbol error correction encoder effects block interleaving on recording data and thereafter performs first error correction encoding on the recording data. Next, a symbol error correction encoder performs encoding on the whole block. A reproducing processing circuit outputs likelihood information of respective bits. A first error correction decoder corrects a random error produced upon recording and reproduction, using the likelihood information. Since it is possible to make an improvement in performance with respect to the random error by repetitive decoding at this time, the post-correction data is returned to the reproducing processing circuit. After the completion of such repetitive processing, the data is digitized and subjected to an error correction in symbol unit by a hard determination, and outputted to a symbol error correction decoder.

  • Patent number: 7268707
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention allow relatively simple circuits to provide a coding device capable of coding longer bit-length data suitably for disk apparatus and a decoding device capable of decoding the data coded by the coding device. In one embodiment, a coding device comprises: a coder which, based on an M bits code string, produces an (M+1) bits coded string where each of the plural bits which may appear in the M bits code string is limited in run length; a preprocessor which produces an M bits code string by removing (N?M) bits respectively from predefined (N?M) positions of an incoming N bits code string and outputs the M bits code string to the coder; and a postprocessor which produces and outputs an (N+1) bits code string by inserting the (N?M) bits, which are removed by the preprocessor, into predefined (N?M) respective insertion positions of the (M+1) bits coded string output from the coder.

  • Patent number: 7256953
Abstract: A data discriminating unit includes a data discriminator and a sync signal discriminator. A data sync signal is detected for the bit string discriminated from the output of the sync signal discriminator, and the data is demodulated for the bit string discriminated from the output of the data discriminator, thereby optimizing the signal to a form suitable for discrimination and detection of the data sync signal and demodulation for data reproduction. As a result, the detection performance of the data sync signal can be improved while maintaining the data discrimination performance. A Viterbi decoder is used for discrimination by the data discriminator and the sync signal discriminator for the optimization thereby to optimize the number of states, the number of paths for state transition and the path memory length. A signal having no continuous inversions of the recording data is used as the data sync signal.

  • Patent number: 7245236
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention a signal processing method capable of realizing low decoding error ratio by using a simple configuration free from unnecessary redundant bits. In one embodiment, user data (512 bytes+additional data) input to an input terminal is RLL-encoded by a RLL encoder 1. The data from the RLL encoder—1 is entered into a symbol error correction encoder where 9-bit symbol encoding is done. Its RS code portion is RLL-encoded by a RLL encoder—2. Signal read from a magnetic disk is entered into a RLL decoder—2 where the RS code portion is RLL-decoded. The signal from the RLL decoder—2 is then entered into a symbol error correction decoder where random read/write errors, burst errors attributable to defects and other errors are corrected to produce a (user data+RLL) signal. This data is output to an output terminal after being decoded by a RLL decoder—1.
