  • Patent number: 4406772
Abstract: Heavy hydrocarbon oils such as vacuum residues are converted into light hydrocarbon oils by reaction with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst. The catalyst is obtained as a by-product in the system and includes a coke produced by the hydrotreatment and metal components, such as vanadium and nickel, derived from the heavy hydrocarbon oils and deposited on the coke during the hydrotreatment. A portion of the reaction residue is subjected to a treatment to recover the metal components, a part of which are used in the catalyst.
