Patent number: 8199427Abstract: A disk drive. The disk drive includes a head-slider, an actuator, a ramp and a shroud. The head-slider is configured to fly above the disk. The actuator is configured to support the head-slider and to swing about a pivot shaft to move the head-slider in a radial direction of the disk. The actuator may also be configured to rest on the ramp in a stand-by position. The shroud includes an inner peripheral side surface and an outer peripheral side surface. The shroud is configured to control an air-stream which flows in a direction from the pivot shaft toward the head-slider. The inner peripheral side surface and the outer peripheral side surface are configured to blast the head-slider with the air-stream upon spinning the disk when the head-slider is positioned away from the disk in the stand-by position.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 2009Date of Patent: June 12, 2012Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Kazuhisa Murakami, Teruyoshi Higashiya, Mitsuhiko Oguchi, Masanobu Honda

Patent number: 7719783Abstract: Embodiments of the invention suppress collision between a head element section and a magnetic disk. In manufacturing a hard disk drive (HDD) according to an embodiment of the present invention, recession R is preliminarily measured for each head slider. Recession R means the amount of recession of the head element section relative to the slider. Write current and heater current values respectively for the write device and the TFC heater are registered based on the measured recession. Since these values are set according to the recession of the head element section, it is possible to prevent each head element section from colliding with the magnetic disk while reducing the clearance between each head element section and the magnetic disk.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 2006Date of Patent: May 18, 2010Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventor: Teruyoshi Higashiya

Patent number: 7609476Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide a magnetic disk drive whose flexibility in the layout of components is enhanced in spite of the fact that a magnetic disk and a driving section such as the voice coil motor that drives a head arm are isolated from each other. In one embodiment, a magnetic disk drive includes a magnetic disk compartment in which a magnetic disk, a head that reads/writes data from/onto the magnetic disk, and a head arm holding the head are disposed, and a VCM compartment with an internally disposed VCM that pivotally moves the head arm about a pivot shaft. The magnetic disk compartment and the VCM compartment are separated by an isolation wall provided at the bottom of the magnetic disk compartment along the recording surface of the magnetic disk. The pivot shaft is disposed in a penetrating form in an opening.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 2006Date of Patent: October 27, 2009Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventor: Teruyoshi Higashiya
