A correction unit corrects by carrying out a gap correction process for correcting a gap of the sampling positions of each of the line sensors in accordance with the sample values stored in the storage unit and an instructing unit instructs the transferring unit. In accordance with a rate of magnification for scanning the original document and the capacity of the storage unit, the instructing unit determines whether the gap correction process according to the rate of magnification can be carried out.
