  • Patent number: 6111714
Abstract: A disk drive and a control method for the disk drive to reduce the number of unnecessary write inhibition operations. A microprocessor unit (MPU) 6 sets an allowable value Cv for the velocity of a magnetic head 1 to V0 until the head passes over N1 sectors after completion of a seek operation, Cv to V1 until the head passes over N2 sectors after passage of N1 sectors, and Cv to V2 after passage of N2 sectors. (N1<N2 and V0<V1<V2) A hard-disk controller (HDC) 10 detects the velocity of the magnetic head 1, based on a position error signal PES from a servo sector regeneration section 8a, and prohibits the write operation of the magnetic head 1 if the velocity exceeds Cv.

  • Patent number: 6049439
Abstract: A method and apparatus for improving the data readability in a disk drive is described. The disk drive uses an error recovery mode in which the rotational speed of the motor is decreased below the normal operating speed and a rereading is performed. The reduced speed lowers the energy generated in collisions with a foreign object and the data error length is shortened allowing data to be read which cannot be read at the normal operating speed.

  • Patent number: 5969895
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus to efficiently switch heads in a disk drive. A disk drive comprises a plurality of recording surfaces and a plurality of heads and each head is opposed to a recording surface. The heads are used for reading data from or writing data to the plurality of recording surfaces. An offset quantity table stores an offset quantity for each of the plurality of heads. The offset quantity is a value representative of the distance of a head with respect to a reference head. A head sequence table stores a predetermined head switching sequence. Head switching operations use the head switching sequence stored in the head sequence table.

  • Patent number: 5817284
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for decomposing any of chlorocarbons, chlorofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and SF.sub.6 contained in a gas. This method includes the step of bringing the gas into contact, at a temperature of at least 300.degree. C., with a first mixture consisting essentially of 0.05-40 wt % of potassium hydroxide and at least one compound selected from the group consisting of alkali-earth-metal oxides and alkali-earth-metal hydroxides, for decomposing the at least one halide compound. When the halide compound-containing gas further contains oxygen, this gas may be brought into contact, at a temperature of at least 500.degree. C., with at least one first substance selected from the group consisting of active carbon, iron powder and nickel powder, for removing the oxygen from the gas, prior to the halide compound decomposition. When the halide compound-containing gas still further contains a strong oxidizing gas (e.g.

  • Patent number: 4259177
Abstract: A process for producing olefines by using a fluidized bed of coke particles rovided in each of a reactor and a heater, circulating coke particles through the reactor and the heater, heating the coke particles by a combustion of fuel and if desired, a part of the coke particles in the heater, thermally cracking a heavy oil with a heated coke particles as a heat carrier in the reactor, the improvement which comprises a distillation residue is converted into a high-temperature, low-calorie gas in a combustion chamber, and the coke particles is heated with the gas in the heater, further an increment of coke deposited on a surface of the coke particles is burned by blowing air to the heater.

  • Patent number: 4049540
Abstract: A process for the thermal cracking of heavy oils with a fluidized particulate heat carrier is carried out while recovering particles of the heat carrier accompanied by a stream of the reaction product by means of a cyclone and a gravitational separator, returning the particles of the heat carrier recovered by the cyclone directly to the reactor and returning the particles of the heat carrier recovered by the gravitational separator to the reactor in the form of suspension in a cracked oil.

  • Patent number: 4005743
Abstract: A method of, and apparatus for, the continuous casting of molten metals, especially steel, wherein the molten metal is delivered through the agency of a multiplicity of pouring tubes having outlet or discharge openings inclined at a predetermined angle to the horizontal into the molten metal bath contained within a continuous casting mold. A deflecting wall or baffle means between the pouring tubes controls the flow of the molten metal in the mold. The method of continuously casting molten metal contemplates providing baffle means between a plurality of oppositely situated pouring tubes immersed in the molten metal bath of the continuous casting mold, feeding the molten metal through the pouring tubes in the form of casting jets entering the continuous casting mold through outlet openings of the pouring tubes, and directing the outflowing metal casting jets so as to impact against the baffle means in order to control the flow of metal in the continuous casting mold.
