  • Publication number: 20100056977
Abstract: A method for relieving pressure within the eye in the treatment of glaucoma comprising inserting an extremely thin flat trans-corneal drainage shunt, having no detrimental cap or footplate, within a self-sealing incision made by a keratome knife within the cornea at the limbus, the drainage shunt having extremely small pores formed therein for the controlled transport of aqueous fluid from an anterior portion of the eye to the tear film on the surface of the eye while deterring bacteria from entering the eye, and fixing the position of the trans-corneal shunt in position within the cornea by means of a suture. The shunt can be tapered for preventing an unacceptable degree of intrusion of the shunt into the anterior portion of the eye. The trailing edge portion of the shunt is wide relative to other portions of the shunt, thereby facilitating grasping of the shunt when desired.

  • Publication number: 20080221501
Abstract: The present invention provides systems and methods for reducing intraocular pressure, thereby to treat glaucoma and other disorders. The systems of the present invention include a shunt insertable across the clear cornea and a delivery device for inserting the shunt in the transcorneal position. The shunt has a body with a head at one end and a foot at the opposite end, and a channel therethrough permitting the passage of aqueous humor from the anterior chamber to the external surface of the cornea. A removable filter is positioned within the channel to regulate aqueous humor outflow and to resist the incursion of microorganisms.

  • Publication number: 20050119737
Abstract: An ocular implant device that is insertable into either the anterior or posterior chamber of the eye to drain aqueous humor and/or to introduce medications. The implant can include a substantially cylindrical body with a channel member that regulates the flow rate of aqueous humor from the anterior chamber or introduces medications into the posterior chamber, and simultaneously minimizes the ingress of microorganisms into the eye.

  • Patent number: 5807302
Abstract: A treatment of glaucoma by direct flow of the aqueous humor through a slit passage in the cornea to the tear film, while maintaining sterility of the anterior chamber. A stent device, supported by the cornea, provides the passage, with a filter element therein to prevent bacterial incursion within the eye and to regulate aqueous humor flow. The filter may be replaceable, if necessary, by vacuum removal. The invention includes an installation device for cutting the slit and a device for gaping open the slit and for guiding and locking the stent into proper placement.
