  • Publication number: 20140192166
Abstract: Optical systems utilize waveplates to simultaneously encode information for increasing image depth of field and for providing a depth map of the imaged object or sample. These waveplates are configured to result in a focus-invariant point spread function in one focal region, and to result in point spread functions that vary as a function of range within the imaged object in a different focal region. For example, a basic compound microscope might have a specially shaped waveplate inserted at the back aperture plane of the microscope objective to manipulate the phase of the wavefront. An image formed on one side of the plane of best focus is focus invariant, and is brought into focus by a restoring algorithm. An image formed on the other side of the plane of best focus captures point spread functions comprising rings that vary with depth within the imaged object.

  • Publication number: 20140152814
Abstract: Devices, systems, and methods for imaging and measuring deflections in structures such as railroad rail are disclosed. One exemplary embodiment relates to a vision system having a high-speed, visible-light imaging camera and an evaluation unit configured for analyzing images from the camera to detect geometric variations in the structure. In a second example, additional sensors are used to identify the wheel location(s) in the same reference frame as the measurement system. In analyzing structures such as railroad track rail, the imaging camera can be coupled to a moving rail vehicle and configured for generating images of the rail as the vehicle moves along the track.

  • Publication number: 20140138629
Abstract: An organic optoelectronic device (OED) includes a plurality of OED cells separated by a vapor flow barrier that extends away from a substrate surface. The vapor flow barrier partially defines an OED cell area and helps prevent stray organic material deflected away from the substrate surface during deposition from being deposited outside the cell area. An organic vapor jet (OVJ) print head can be used to deposit organic material along the vapor flow barrier and may include one or more features configured to capture some of the stray organic material. A method that includes use of vapor flow barriers and/or capturing stray organic material can facilitate high-density printing of OED cells such as OLEDs with sharply defined edges and without cross-contamination among adjacent cells.

  • Publication number: 20140121990
Abstract: A system is disclosed in which human genomes are stored in databases or in a cloud based computer system, which is secure and private and then downloaded to personal devices for possible peer-to-peer interactions for health care applications, as well as for social and other applications. The use of the system is directed to fully sequenced genomes and includes protocols that are constructed to mimic in vitro biological tests to conduct genomic analysis instead of generic computational techniques, which tend to be impractical as they require performance of online computation over the entire genome. Three specific examples of protocols or techniques for privacy-preserving testing on fully sequenced genomes included are: 1) privacy-preserving genetic paternity testing, 2) privacy-preserving personalized medicine testing, and 3) privacy-preserving genetic compatibility testing.

  • Publication number: 20140103295
Abstract: A 1D nanowire photodetector device includes a nanowire that is individually contacted by electrodes for applying a longitudinal electric field which drives the photocurrent. An intrinsic radial electric field to inhibits photo-carrier recombination, thus enhancing the photocurrent response. Circuits of 1D nanowire photodetectors include groups of photodetectors addressed by their individual 1D nanowire electrode contacts. Placement of 1D nanostructures is accomplished with registration onto a substrate. A substrate is patterned with a material, e.g., photoresist, and trenches are formed in the patterning material at predetermined locations for the placement of 1D nanostructures. The 1D nanostructures are aligned in a liquid suspension, and then transferred into the trenches from the liquid suspension. Removal of the patterning material places the 1D nanostructures in predetermined, registered positions on the substrate.

  • Publication number: 20140079098
Abstract: A linear transform can be performed using a passive analog multi-stage charge re-use linear transform circuit. The passive analog multi-stage charge re-use linear transform circuit transforms an input analog circuit to generate a transformed analog output signal. The passive analog multi-stage charge re-use linear transform circuit may be included in a software defined radio (SDR), where the transformed analog output signal may be output to an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) of the SDR device so as to enable the ADC to perform wideband spectrum sensing. The passive analog multi-stage charge re-use linear transform circuit may also be included in a beamforming device so as to enable the device to perform spectral shifting and spatial shifting of signals. This passive analog multi-stage charge re-use linear transform circuit may promote reduced power consumption in comparison to other circuits while also supporting wideband applications at high sampling rates.
