  • Patent number: 4711146
Abstract: Conventional methods for reprofiling profiles of wheel sets by lathe machining predominantly produce continuous chips which interfere with the operating process, which can cause damage to the machine and which require continuous attention on the part of the operating personnel. The production of short fragmented chips through the use of suitable cutting edge geometry is impossible because of the continuous change of the cutting data during the reprofiling of such work pieces. In order to eliminate this problem, the profile is faced off or turned through the alternating use of hard-metal cutting materials and heavy-duty cutting materials and by adapting the cutting data to the cutting material then in use, wherein the heavy-duty cutting material is used in those profile regions in which a shock or sudden load on the cutting material is not expected, while the hard-metal cutting materials are used in the remaining regions.

  • Patent number: 4693146
Abstract: Chip separation is assured while turning work pieces, by causing an oscillating movement of the turning or lathe tool during the work piece rotation. The tool oscillation is controlled in response to the work piece rotation and so that the tool oscillates periodically along or rather relative to a line defined by the feed adavance vectors of the tool movement . The oscillation amplitude corresponds approximately to half the effective feed advance path for each work piece revolution. The wave length of the oscillation has a magnitude such that it itself or an integral multiple thereof, plus a half wave length, is equal to the momentary respective work piece circumference at the instantaneous point of contact between the tool and the work piece. Several ways are possible for imparting an oscillating movement to the tool support or tool supports.

  • Patent number: 4597143
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for reprofiling the wheels of a railroad wheelset by circumferentially milling the wheelset while the wheels are driven and partly supported by drive rollers, the wheelset being partly supported at its bearing housing. Before profile milling, a reference surface is created by a turning operation as base for measuring the radial infeed of the profile milling cutter. The turning tool required is disposed on the profile milling cutter which is lockable secure against rotation. By coordinating the position of the milling devices with the position of the respective turning devices a positional relation is automatically established between the milling device and the axis of the wheelset.

  • Patent number: 4399724
Abstract: A milling machine for turning sets of wheels, especially railroad wheels, comprises at least one roller contacting the wheel circumference and at least one roller contacting the axially inwardly facing wheel surface for driving and/or supporting the wheels of a set. The circumferential roller and the inner roller for the same wheel are operatively supported by a common support such as a common housing whereby axial forces are taken up reliably so that axial excursions of the wheel set are prevented.

  • Patent number: 4347769
Abstract: This invention relates to an underfloor wheel set lathe for the profiling of wheel sets of trackbound vehicles of the type in which the wheels are at least in part supposed by rolls carried by a roll carrier, at least one of the rolls being driven. Movement of the roll carrier is resisted by a horizontally acting brake mechanism which permits vertical lifting movements of the carrier. The force with which horizontal movement is resisted may, by suitable hydraulic means, be controlled as a function of the cutting force or driving force imparted to the wheels, the lifting force exerted against the wheels, or otherwise coordinated with the force applied in the course of profiling.

  • Patent number: 4116094
Abstract: A method for centering the wheels of a two wheel set with the centerline extending between the dead centers of a machining-, measuring-, or testing-apparatus, in which each wheel of the set is lifted by a separate lifting device and in which the position of each wheel during its lifting is sensed by a separate sensing device, coordinated with the respective lifting device, to stop further lifting movement of the respective lifting device when the center of the respective wheel coincides with the centerline of the apparatus, to thus properly align the centers of the wheels of the two wheel sets with the centerline of the apparatus regardless of any difference of the diameters of the two wheels or any asymmetrical loading on the axle of the wheel set; and an apparatus for carrying out the method.

  • Patent number: 4110910
Abstract: To measure simultaneously the outer diameter of sets of profiled wheels which are formed by a turning operation and therefore provided with circumferentially extending grooves, an apparatus is provided having a pair of metering wheels which have respective cylindrical circumferential faces of nominally identical diameter and width. The width of each face is bisected by a plane intersecting the plane that encompasses the diameter to be measured, on a line tangent to this diameter. The metering wheels are mounted for rotation about axes of rotation which extend parallel to the enveloping line in the plane to be measured.

  • Patent number: 4033209
Abstract: A machine for reprofiling wheels of rail vehicles includes, for each wheel of a wheel set, a pair of support rolls arranged spaced from each other in a plane normal to the axis of the wheel set. The peripheral surface of each support roll has an axially extending carrying zone and an axially extending transfer zone following the carrying zone in a direction toward the center plane of the wheel set and being inclined with respect to a horizontal line through an angle greater than the angle included between the desired profile to be machined into a portion of the wheel opposite the transfer zone and a horizontal line.
