Publication number: 20080225899Abstract: A method for synchronizing clocks in a packet transport network. The method comprises, receiving an external network clock at a central packet network node and transmitting timing information to a plurality of packet network devices, the timing information based upon the external network clock. The method further comprises, transmitting and receiving data that is synchronized to the timing information to a plurality of connected packet network devices. And finally, delivery of packets to an external interface via a packet network that contains data synchronized to the external network clock.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 4, 2008Publication date: September 18, 2008Applicant: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Theodore F. Rabenko, Lisa V. Denney

Patent number: 7190704Abstract: A method for communicating information is disclosed wherein a time slot is allocated in a time division multiple access system for a transmission from a subscriber to a headend. Synchronization of a clock of the subscriber with respect to a clock of the headend is enhanced using a message transmitted from the headend to the subscriber which is indicative of an error in a subscriber transmission time with respect to the time slot. A feedback loop process is used to determine at least one of fractional symbol timing correction and carrier phase correction of a transmission from the subscriber to the headend. Filter coefficients are generated at the headend from a ranging signal transmitted from the subscriber to the headend and transmitting the filter coefficients from the headend to the subscriber, the filter coefficients being used by the subscriber to compensate for noise in a transmission from the subscriber to the headend.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 2004Date of Patent: March 13, 2007Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Theodore F. Rabenko, James C. H. Thi, John D. Horton, Jr., Thomas J. Quigley, Lisa V. Denney, Jonathan S. Min, Christopher R. Jones, Henry Samueli, Fang Lu, Feng Chen, Sean F. Nazareth

Patent number: 7106723Abstract: A telephony system and method is provided that reduces delay and provides better utilization of upstream bandwidth in delivering packet telephony services to a plurality of subscriber lines via a cable modem system. An exemplary system includes a plurality of voice processing modules, a host processor, and a buffer. Each voice processing module receives digital voice signals from a separate set of subscriber lines, compresses the digital voice signals to generate a voice packet, and transfers the voice packet to the buffer. The host processor then assembles a packet by concatenating the voice packets and transmits the assembled packet for delivery over a data network. Because the plurality of voice processing modules process the voice packets in parallel, delay is reduced in the assembly and transmission of the assembled packet.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 2001Date of Patent: September 12, 2006Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventor: Theodore F Rabenko

Patent number: 7046796Abstract: A system and method is provided for supplying power over a home phone line network in a manner that is interoperable with other voice and data services operating on the same network. The system includes a power source coupled to the home phone line network. The power source includes an AC signal generator that generates an AC signal at a selected frequency. The power source also includes a band pass filter for removing unwanted harmonics from the AC signal, thereby generating a filtered AC signal for powering one or more devices on the home phone line network. One or more devices attached to the home phone line network, such as a telephone adapter or telephone, receives the filtered AC signal. Each device comprises a second band pass filter and an AC/DC converter. The second band pass filter passes the filtered AC signal to the AC/DC converter and prevents the introduction of undesired harmonics onto the home phone line network from the AC/DC converter.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 2005Date of Patent: May 16, 2006Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Theodore F. Rabenko, Charles G. Wier, Steven L. Caine, John H. Gleiter, Kevin L. Miller

Patent number: 6996128Abstract: A method and system of processing sampled voice packets from a voice packet sender for transmission over a bit-rate sampled data transmission system, such as by a cable modem over a cable modem termination system, to a voice packet recipient. Unsolicited grant arrivals in response to a request from the voice packet sender coupled to the cable modem are determined. The storing of sampled voice packets is synchronized with the unsolicited grant arrivals. Upon receipt of an unsolicited grant arrival, currently stored sampled voice packets are transmitted to the cable modem for further transmission to the voice packet recipient over the cable modem termination system.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2004Date of Patent: February 7, 2006Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Theodore F. Rabenko, James C. H. Thi, John D. Horton, Jr.
