    Abstract: A data generation system includes a profile system and a populate system. The profile system analyzes the data of the database to be profiled to determine characteristics of the data including distribution of data values. A user-specified profile template defines the data to be profiled and how the data is to be profiled. After the profile template is specified, the profile system generates a profile of a profile database as specified by the profile template. The populate system populates a database with data having characteristics that are based on a generated profile. The populate system can thus generate a test database with data that has characteristics that are derived from a profile generated from a production database.
