Patent number: 6100916Abstract: A technique for the blocking of individual programs and/or portions of programs transmitted in a source signal, e.g., a cable television signal. In particular, individual programs and/or portions of programs within a class of programs are blocked, while allowing for the viewing of certain other programs even within the same programming class. The transmitted source signal contains individual programs having a transparent program identifier and/or transparent content identifier associated with individual programs in the source signal transmission. As the source signal enters, e.g., a particular subscriber location, the source signal is monitored in accordance with a program viewing profile defined by the subscriber. That is, particular ones of the programs and/or portion thereof available in the source signal transmission supplied to the subscriber can either be unblocked, i.e., viewable, or blocked, i.e., unviewable, at the discretion of the subscriber.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1998Date of Patent: August 8, 2000Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Katherine Grace August, Avi I. Hauser, John M. Manoyan, Theodore Sizer, II

Patent number: 6036086Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, an apparatus initiates a transaction and includes a capture device for capturing transaction data from marks contained on an object. The marks have a code corresponding to transaction data for initiating a transaction. The capture device includes a scanner, operable by a user, for reading marks contained on the object. A controller interprets the marks and retrieves the transaction data embedded in the marks. The capture device originates a telephone call and transfers at least a portion of the transaction data to a desired destination for initiating a transaction.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1997Date of Patent: March 14, 2000Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Theodore Sizer, II, Katherine G. Patent number: 6021432Abstract: A broadcast stream contains different types of information with the different types identified in the stream. An information processing device receives the broadcast stream and selectively captures (for future playback) only those pieces of information corresponding to one or more preselected types of information. In one embodiment, the broadcast stream is a radio broadcast and the different types are identified in digital sidebands of the radio signals. In other embodiments, the broadcast stream is embedded into audio signals or video signals using luminance or chrominance modulation or other spread spectrum techniques. A user is able to edit a personal profile that is stored in the device and contains the list of preselected types of information.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1997Date of Patent: February 1, 2000Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Theodore Sizer, II, Katherine G. Patent number: 5929920Abstract: Digital information is encoded in the video portion of a television signal such that "n" (n is an integer) bits of the digital information are carried by each successive frame in a group of frames. The digital information is encoded by modulating a carrier signal, using, for example, either amplitude shift keying (ASK) or frequency shift keying (FSK), and the modulated carrier is then added to the video signal selectively, only in portions of the television program that (a) are not likely to be perceptible by a viewer, and (b) are of sufficient intensity to transmit the data. The video signal including the encoded digital data, may be transmitted, in real time, to a television receiver, or recorded for later playback.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1997Date of Patent: July 27, 1999Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Theodore Sizer, II

Patent number: 5914946Abstract: A time-division-multiplexed fixed wireless loop system and methods therefor are disclosed. The system comprises a plurality of cells each having a base station and a plurality of terminals. The base station includes a steerable and adjustable multibeam antenna for communicating with each of the terminals, which have fixed antennas. A cell controller associated with each base station allocates communication time slots so as to minimize mutual interference between base station/terminal links sharing the same time slot. Slot assignment is based on regional, periodically updated interference measurements that are stored in data bases.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1996Date of Patent: June 22, 1999Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Dan Avidor, Sanjay Kasturia, Theodore Sizer, II, Reinaldo A. Patent number: 5802148Abstract: A system for generating aural announcements of incoming calls within a premises has a premises phone connected within a premises phone line that forms first and second communication channels. The first communication channel is adapted for connection and communication to a phone network. An announcement controller is connected within the phone line and generates aural announcement signals along the second communication channel to a speaker which plays corresponding aural announcements. A switch may be operatively connected between the premises phone and announcement controller and switches the announcement controller into the second communication channel for transmitting aural announcement signals to a premises phone via the switch.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 1995Date of Patent: September 1, 1998Assignee: Lucent Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Theodore Sizer, II

Patent number: 5781625Abstract: A system and apparatus includes a premises phone connected to a phone network along a first communication channel. A dial tone controller generates within the premises a dial tone along a second communication channel to a switch and to the premises phone. The dial tone controller receives and processes signals received from the premises phone via the switch along the second communication channel and can generate DTMF tones for establishing communication to the phone network based on generated signals received from the premises phone. The switch is operatively connected between the premises phone and the dial tone controller for switching the premises phone from communication with the phone network along the first communication channel and communication with the dial tone controller via the switch along the second communication channel so that the premises phone receives a dial tone from and sends signals to the dial tone controller.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1995Date of Patent: July 14, 1998Assignee: Lucent Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Theodore Sizer, II

Patent number: 5706334Abstract: Techniques for employing a television set and a television set controller as the control interface for devices which themselves do not have display capability and for services provided via the telephone network. The techniques involve control apparatus which is connected to the telephone network and a television set and is responsive to inputs from a hand-held controller for the television set. The control apparatus outputs a screen which contains control selections to the television set and the user employs the controller to make a selection. The control apparatus then performs the control function specified by the selection. One application is a telephone messaging system: integral with the control apparatus is a system which can answer calls and store voice messages, fax messages, character-string messages, and script messages. The control apparatus plays the voice messages on the television set and provide screens to the television set which display the fax and character-string messages.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 1995Date of Patent: January 6, 1998Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Michael W.
