  • Patent number: 5744411
Abstract: An aluminum nitride sintered product with a high thermal conductivity (at least 100 W/m.K) can be prepared at a sintering temperature of less than 1850.degree. C. (often less than 1650.degree. C.) using a sinterable combination of aluminum nitride powder with at least three sintering aids. The sintering aids include a source of a rare earth metal oxide, a source of an alkaline earth metal oxide, a boron source and, optionally, a source of aluminum oxide. The sinterable combinations may also be used to prepare cofired, multilayer substrates.

  • Patent number: 5710382
Abstract: Aluminum nitride powder, aluminum nitride platelets, powdered solid solutions of aluminum nitride and at least one other ceramic material such as silicon carbide, and composites of aluminum nitride and transition metal borides or carbides are prepared by combustion synthesis at low gaseous nitrogen pressures. Porous bodies of aluminum nitride or composites of aluminum nitride and transition metal borides or carbides are also prepared by combustion synthesis at these pressures. The porous bodies are suitable for infiltration, either as formed or after being coated with at least one layer of a silicate material, by polymers or metals. The powders are also suitable for preparing dense sintered bodies. The aluminum nitride powder is also used to prepare AlN sintered bodies.

  • Patent number: 5320990
Abstract: Prepare sintered aluminum nitride bodies having a thermal conductivity of at least 200 W/m-K by sintering under non-reducing conditions and controlling interrelated parameters such as binder burnout atmosphere, heating rate, sintering temperature, time at sintering temperature, cooling rate and cooling temperature. Sintered bodies having thermal conductivities in excess of 200, especially in excess of 270, W/m-K result from this process.

  • Patent number: 5273699
Abstract: Moisture-resistant aluminum nitride powder which is treated with an yttrium-containing compound. The method of treating the aluminum nitride compound includes (a) thoroughly mixing a slurry containing aluminum nitride powder, an yttrium-containing compound, and a solvent for the yttrium-containing compound in the absence of any surfactant and (b) removing the solvent from the slurry. The moisture-resistant aluminum nitride powder may be used in aqueous formulations for making ceramic articles.
