  • Patent number: 6039730
Abstract: The present invention pertains to an apparatus for cryosurgery. The apparatus comprises a cryoneedle having a diameter less than 3.2 mm. The apparatus is also comprised of a thermal insulation shell disposed about a portion of the cryoneedle for reduction of heat transfer from surrounding tissues or freezing prevention of surrounding tissues during application of the cryoneedle with the shell. The cryoneedle and shell are configured for insertion into a body of a patient. The present invention pertains to a method for freezing tissues. The method comprises the steps of bringing into contact a cryoneedle having a diameter of less than 3.2 mm with a patient's body. Next, there is the step of flowing the cryofluid through the cryoneedle.

  • Patent number: 5939101
Abstract: A vent for a mold having a mold cavity comprising a vent main body, a valve closure member having an upper end face for positioning at the surface of the mold cavity, the valve closure member being moveable with respect to the vent main body for opening and closing the vent, a spring opening mechanism formed integrally with the vent main body for opening the vent, and a valve seat between the valve closure member and the main body wherein the vent is closed by material in the mold cavity contacting the upper end face of the valve closure member.

  • Patent number: 5899897
Abstract: The system includes a mechanism for freezing tissue in a patient. Additionally, the system includes a mechanism for heating other tissue near the tissue being frozen by the freezing mechanism such that essentially only desired region is frozen by the freezing mechanism and heat from the heating mechanism prevents the other tissue from being frozen. The heating mechanism is disposed adjacent to but separate and apart from the freezing mechanism. Alternatively, the mechanism for heating can be used with tissue already frozen by the freezing mechanism. A method for performing cryosurgery on a patient. The method includes the steps of inserting a cryoprobe into a patient. Next, there is the step of placing a cryoheater in contact with the patient adjacent the cryoprobe. Then, there is the step of activating the cryoprobe and the cryoheater so the cryoprobe freezes desired tissue in the patient and the cryoheater heats other tissue around the desired tissue so the other tissue is not frozen by the cryoprobe.

  • Patent number: 5783309
Abstract: A structure and method for removing and recovering an anodically bonded glass device from a substrate using a metal interlayer interposed between the glass and the substrate is provided. As used in semiconductor mask fabrication, the structure comprises a silicon wafer substrate coated with a membrane on which a metal interlayer is disposed. The metal interlayer and a glass device are anodically bonded together. Recovery of the glass device is accomplished by chemically and mechanically removing the wafer and its membrane from the metal interlayer. The membrane is preferably removed using reactive ion etching to which the metal interlayer is resistant. The metal interlayer is then removed from the glass device using a highly corrosive chemical solution. The recovered glass device may then be reused.

  • Patent number: 4559035
Abstract: A self-contained, independently operable closed wound suction evacuator which is comprised of a box-like internal body structure disposed within a fluid tight, flexible outer pouch. The pouch includes an inlet/outlet valve for providing communication between the interior of the pouch and the atmosphere of the interior of the pouch and a drainage tube. The box-like internal body structure is capable of being in an engaged position or in a disengaged position. In the disengaged position, the internal box-like structure can remain in a flat condition without causing the tensioning member to be stretched or activated. When ready for use, the internal structure can be manually expanded into its box-like structure. When fully expanded the internal structure will become engaged, hence engaging the tensioning member. Subsequent compression of the internal structure to its flat position stretches the tensioning member and activates the evacuator.

  • Patent number: 4359053
Abstract: The invention disclosed is a means of fastening flexible elastic tubing, such as silicone rubber, to a rigid connector. The invention allows for a liquid and gas tight, secure connection without the use of any bonding materials between the tube and the connector and without any external ribbing, threading, texturing, barbing, etc. of any kind on the connector and without any external clamping mechanism used to keep the tubing firmly attached to the rigid connector. The invention allows for the rigid connector portion of a component, such as a wound drainage surgical needle, to have a very smooth cylindrical surface. The use of a smooth surface with no other adhering mechanism to assist in making a secure connection that will not easily pull off is contrary to what is taught in the art.
