  • Publication number: 20130123841
Abstract: A suture button apparatus is described that comprises a first button, a plate, a second button and a set of sutures. The first button includes a tubular wall that includes a proximal end portion and an opposed distal end portion that define a central longitudinal axis. An inner surface of the tubular wall defines an aperture aligned with the central longitudinal axis and an outer surface of the tubular wall includes threads. The plate defines at least one aperture that receives and connects with the first button. The set of sutures connect the first button and the second button. The set of sutures connect the first and second buttons.

  • Publication number: 20130021158
Abstract: An apparatus for detecting sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea, includes a housing insertable into an ear canal of a subject. A sensor disposed within the housing measures a position of the subject's head relative to an axis of gravity. A transducer is responsive to the sensor and is capable of creating a stimulus detectable by the subject under certain conditions. In various embodiments, a controller receives signals corresponding to a pitch angle and a roll angle of the subject's head measured by the sensor, determines if the pitch and roll angles correspond to a sleep apnea inducing position, and causes the transducer to generate a stimulus upon determining that the subject's head is in the sleep apnea inducing position more than a predetermined threshold number of times. Various parameters of the stimulus may be modified with successive stimulus generation until a non-sleep apnea inducing position is detected.

  • Publication number: 20100261178
Abstract: The subject invention provides methods of screening compounds or ligands that interact with human and/or non-human PAQR receptors or fungal osmotin receptors. These methods utilize a colorimetric assay to ascertain whether a compound binds to and activates a PAQR receptor or the osmotin receptor.

  • Patent number: 7412104
Abstract: A method for losslessly encoding and compressing and decoding original, raw, raster data, and other files by optimizing the results of preprocessing and transformation techniques. Four stages are involved: pre-processing during which the data is replaced by predictive values and the deviations from the predictive value; mapping each block through a transform sequence using a lossy reversible mapping; minimizing the joint entropy of the transformed data and deviation data by varying parameters for the predictive and transform step; and encoding the transformed sequence. At each stage of the compression of the data, different techniques are tried and compared and an optimal technique used to carry out that state.

  • Publication number: 20080107755
Abstract: The present invention relates to compositions and methods for altering cell function. In particular, the present invention provides compositions comprising selenium (e.g., SEL-PLEX) and methods of using the same (e.g., as a therapeutic and/or prophylactic treatment). Additionally, the present invention demonstrates that specific forms of selenium (e.g., SEL-PLEX), when administered to a subject, possess the ability to alter (e.g., reduce) gene expression in various tissues (e.g., compared to expression in subjects not administered selenium).

  • Patent number: 7362372
Abstract: A video surveillance camera comprising an image sensor, first housing, second housing, electronic circuit, and thermal barrier. The image sensor is located in the first housing, and the electronic circuit is located in the second housing. The thermal barrier has first and second sides with the first side located adjacent to the first housing and the second side located adjacent to the second housing. The image sensor and other electronics, such as the processor board associated with the image sensor or the camera power supply, are located in separate housings or chambers that are separated and insulated from each other by a thermal barrier, thereby minimizing the heat generated by the processor electronics or power supply from being transferred to the area of the image sensor.

  • Patent number: 7307663
Abstract: A video surveillance camera comprising a lens, lens holder, image sensor, base, and ring. The base has a plurality of slots, and the image sensor is mounted on the base. The lens is positioned in the lens holder, which has a plurality of arms with a pin. Each of the arms is positioned so that its respective pin is located in one of the plurality of slots in the base. The ring has a plurality of grooves for engagement with the pins and is rotatably engaged with the base such that rotation of the ring imparts axial movement to the lens relative to the image sensor.

  • Publication number: 20070251780
Abstract: A brake system comprises a brake lever that operates an integrated brake assembly that is housed within a portion of the frame of a bicycle. Operation of the brake system can employ a master cylinder that is actuated by the brake lever either directly or by cable. Actuation of the master cylinder causes one or more corresponding slave cylinders to actuate. The slave cylinders are operatively coupled with the master cylinder via a hydraulic line. Actuation of the one or more slave cylinders causes a brake pad that is connected to the slave cylinder to come into contact with the rim of the bicycle.

  • Publication number: 20070162066
Abstract: A clear view cannula is described that includes a first tube, a second tube and a counter-pressure ring. The tubes are concentric, adjoined and define a longitudinally aligned aperture. The cannula has a first position for penetration or removal from a patient and a second position in which a shield structure is deployed within the patient. The ring provides a counter-pressure force that opposes the force applied by the shield structure in the second position and stabilizes the angular position of the cannula in the body of the patient. Detents in the tubes define the first position and the second position of the cannula and limit the travel between the tubes.
