  • Patent number: 9573874
Abstract: Technical grade acrylic acid derived from renewable resources utilizing a base catalyst system by a process including reacting lactide (or lactic acid oligomers) with methyl acetate to form methyl 2-acetoxypropionate in the presence of a base catalyst such as sodium methoxide, pyrolyzing the methyl 2-acetoxypropionate, with or without a catalyst, to methyl acrylate and acetic acid, transesterifying the mixture to acrylic acid and methyl acetate, separating and purifying the acrylic acid by distillation late in the presence of polymerization inhibitor(s). The disclosed process will produce a “green” (i.e. renewable resources derived) acrylic acid and/or methyl acrylate ester.

  • Patent number: 9039333
Abstract: A discharge system for removing a solid/gas mixture from a fluidized bed pressure vessel is provided. The system includes a fluidized bed pressure vessel, settling vessels, discharge lines, primary discharge valves, vent lines, primary vent valves, crosstie lines, crosstie valves, and primary exit valves wherein the system is absent a transfer tank, and absent a filter element. The method provides for transferring a solid/gas mixture via a discharge line from the pressure vessel to a settling vessel, wherein gas is separated from the mixture, and the gas is transferred to at least one other settling vessel via a crosstie line. After the solids are transferred out of the settling vessel, the empty vessel then receives gas from other settling vessels in the system.

  • Publication number: 20120078004
Abstract: Technical grade acrylic acid derived from renewable resources utilizing a homogeneous nickel catalyst system by a process including reacting lactide with acetic acid to form 2-acetoxypropionic acid in the presence of a homogeneous nickel catalyst, pyrolyzing, with or without a catalyst, the 2-acetoxypropionic acid to acrylic acid and acetic acid, condensing and collecting the pyrolysis products in the presence of polymerization inhibitor(s) and purfying the acrylic acid by distillation in the presence of polymerization inhibitor(s). Acrylic acid and methyl acrylate are produced from methyl 2-acetoxypropionate which comes from fermentation derived lactic acid. The disclosed process will produce a “green” (i.e. renewable resources derived) acrylic acid and methyl acrylate ester.

  • Patent number: 8129486
Abstract: A discharge system for removing a solid/gas mixture from a fluidized bed pressure vessel is provided. The discharge system includes a fluidized bed pressure vessel, a settling vessel, a transfer vessel, discharge line, primary discharge valve, and primary exit valve. Also in included is a method to operate the discharge system. The method includes transferring a solid/gas mixture from a fluidized bed pressure vessel to a settling vessel, transferring the solids to a transfer vessel, and then emptying the transfer vessel.

  • Publication number: 20100126060
Abstract: Waste water emissions from a biodiesel production facility are substantially reduced by recovering water from a spent water stream used in a water washing step in the refining of crude biodiesel which water washing removes glycerin. The water is recovered from the spent water stream is concentrated to provide an aqueous fraction which can be recycled for the water washing. The concentration also provides a glycerin-containing fraction containing that can be blended with crude glycerin by-product generated by transesterification of glycerides to make the biodiesel.
