Patent number: 10267004Abstract: A flood protection system including a tube plate assembly including a plurality of orifices arranged in a predetermined pattern and density. A tube attachment subsystem is associated with each of the plurality of orifices and is configured to secure an open ended independent barrier tube thereto. A plurality of spaced walls are configured to support the tube plate assembly above the ground such that each barrier tube extends vertically downward from the tube plate to the ground. Filling each barrier tube with the fluid provides outward hydrostatic pressure at each tube-to-tube interface such that friction loss of a flow of flood water along each barrier tube-to-tube interface pathway stops the ingress of the flood water from a flood area to a protected area.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 2017Date of Patent: April 23, 2019Inventor: Thomas A. Smith

Publication number: 20020170766Abstract: A frame and cradle assembly for a vehicle comprising side rails and at least one cross member extending there between that define a ladder-like frame having a forward and rearward portion that correspond to the front and rear of a vehicle. At least one mechanical stop disposed on the cross members properly positions the cross members for attachment to the side rails via a tube through tube joint, resulting in a rigid assembly.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 21, 2001Publication date: November 21, 2002Inventors: Paul F. Patent number: 5622790Abstract: A molten carbonate high temperature fuel cell contains a hydrocarbon-containing fuel reforming catalyst on a support, where the catalyst is produced by reducing a catalyst precursor which is prepared by intimately mixing a defined Feitnecht compound with a non-calcined alumino-silicate clay mineral and at the same time and/or subsequently but prior to calcination with at least one added stabilizing additive for reducing silicon-species loss selected from the group consisting of alkaline earth metal compounds, rare earth metal compounds and mixtures thereof, and, optionally, an alkali metal compound, and thereafter calcining the intimate mixture, wherein the catalyst has been found to be suitable for the steam reforming of methane at the working temperature of the molten carbonate fuel cell and has been found to be substantially resistant to deactivation in the hot alkali metal carbonate environment.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1995Date of Patent: April 22, 1997Assignee: British Gas PLCInventors: Andrew L. Dicks, Thomas A. Smith, Stephen H. Clarke

Patent number: 5083540Abstract: This invention relates to improvements on rotary engines having annular cylinders, each having at least two pistons drivable in rotation therein, the pistons being fixed respectively to concentric shafts that are thereby independently rotated around their concentric axis. Each of the concentric shafts extends through all the cylinders, which are formed by rotatable discs within an annular master cylinder. The concentric shafts are supported for rotation by bearings mounted within the end housings of the annular master cylinder with each of the concentric shafts having an end extending through one of the end housings for connecting to means for independently coupling the two concentric shafts to a common eccentric shaft.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1990Date of Patent: January 28, 1992Inventor: Thomas A. Smith

Patent number: 4880645Abstract: The present invention teaches sweetening a comestible such as a ready-to-eat cereal with a coating comprising a sweetening syrup having from 9% to 85% by weight reducing sugars and a pectin solution. The present invention also teaches a method for sweetening a comestible with a sweetening syrup comprising forming a mixture of sweetening syrup and a pectin solution and coating said mixture onto the surface of the comestible and drying same to a desired moisture content for packaging.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1987Date of Patent: November 14, 1989Assignee: General Foods Corp.Inventors: Thomas L. Patent number: 3953156Abstract: A rotary engine having an annular cylinder with more than one piston drivable in rotation therein, the pistons being fixed respectively to concentric hollow shafts that are thereby independently rotated thereby around their concentric axis. Crank members, at least one per piston, are mounted in ball races that are eccentrically fixed to the respective concentric shafts, the crank members extending diametrically across their respective concentric shafts. An eccentric drive shaft displaced radially from the axis of the concentric shafts mounted for rotation in and extending through said concentric shafts, the eccentric shaft defining diametric holes for slidably engaging the crank members without loss of rotational motion while allowing the crank members to move simultaneously toward the away respectively from the eccentric shaft axis at constantly varying speeds and directions to thereby rotate the eccentric shaft.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 1974Date of Patent: April 27, 1976Inventor: Thomas A.
