Patent number: 10083363Abstract: A method for customizing content presented to a user, including presenting content to the user; receiving condition information related to a condition of the user; modifying the content being presented to the user to facilitate changing of the condition toward a target condition; and presenting the modified content to the user. An embodiment of the method may also include receiving updated condition information of an updated condition of the user after presenting the modified content to the user, where the updated condition is not within a threshold range of the target condition; and modifying the content again to facilitate changing the updated condition to be within the threshold range of the target condition.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 2015Date of Patent: September 25, 2018Assignee: NBCUNIVERSAL MEDIA, LLCInventors: Thomas Bause Mason, Michael Pleckaitis

Patent number: 9967600Abstract: A multi-channel embedded data technique allows for embedding data, such as watermarks into multiple channels of audio, video, multi-media, and other digitized content streams. Two or more of the channels may be utilized. The embedded data may be segmented within each channel, and these segments may start and stop at identical times, or may be staggered or offset from one another. The available payload may be used for different data, or redundant data, providing enhanced reliability. Staggering allows for more rapid availability of at least some of the embedded data segments. References may be used between channels and between data streams to provide for highly complex configurations of encoding and decoding of the embedded data.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 2011Date of Patent: May 8, 2018Assignee: NBCUniversal Media, LLCInventors: Thomas Bause, Sheau Ng

Patent number: 9872081Abstract: A selected spatial portion of digital base content is selected, and one or more alternative content objects is selected to replace the spatial portion. The spatial portion may comprise less than a full frame of the base content, although it may span multiple frames, and may move within the successive frames. The replacement may occur before or after distribution of the content. The selections may be made based upon knowledge of general or specific audiences. The selections may facilitate bandwidth or processing, allow for product placements, or generally enhance the audience experience.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 2014Date of Patent: January 16, 2018Assignee: NBCUniversal Media, LLCInventors: Yasser Fouad Syed, Thomas Bause Mason, Danial Elliott Holden, Sheau Bao Ng

Patent number: 9792390Abstract: Digital content, such as video, audio, multimedia, and similar files may be associated with metadata that is in some manner descriptive of the content by means of a unique identifier generated based on the content or a portion of the content. The two may be packaged in a wrapper. If the content is separated from the metadata, such as by circulation in a non-compliant environment, the content may be recognized by a regeneration of the identifier. Based upon the re-created identifier, the metadata may be re-associated with the content. Other scenarios may include generation of compilations for files that are not included in a wrapper with content and metadata, content that becomes dissociated with metadata by transcoding, and so forth.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 2010Date of Patent: October 17, 2017Assignee: NBCUniveral Media, LLCInventors: Thomas Bause, Michael Shane Wilkinson, Sheau Bao Ng

Patent number: 8538136Abstract: A system and method are provided for analyzing 3D digital content to determine whether a watermark is detectable. The watermark may exist in 2D content that is converted to 3D, and in such cases, the survivability of the watermark to the conversion process is evaluated. An anticipated location of the watermark in left and right 3D images may be determined, and the detectability based upon the anticipated location. A report may indicate whether the watermark survived the conversion in one or both images, or neither. The process may be performed for single frames, sequences of single frames, or entire files containing many image frames. Watermark placement may also be proposed for locations in 2D content, 3D content, or both. Watermarks may similarly be placed in the content.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2010Date of Patent: September 17, 2013Assignee: NBCUniversal MEdia, LLCInventors: Michael Shane Wilkinson, Thomas Bause

Publication number: 20120254404Abstract: A multi-tiered approach to identifying digital content and acting upon the identification includes transmitting data from a device on which the content is stored or played to a first tier entity where the content and the device are identified. The first tier entity may use any one of many techniques for identifying the data and device. Once the identification data is determined, the information is transmitted to any one of multiple second tier entities that work in cooperation with the first tier entity. The second tier entities may then perform any desired functions based on the identification, such as providing offers, content, products and/or services to the device, or to other devices associated with the device or the device user. Other tiers may be employed for carrying out particular functions or activities, such as under the direction of the second tier entities.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 5, 2011Publication date: October 4, 2012Applicant: NBCUniversal Media LLCInventors: Michael Shane Wilkinson, Thomas Bause, Arturo Vermolen, Sheau Ng, John Sullivan
