  • Patent number: 5676495
Abstract: A cutting insert for metal cutting includes a body portion of a generally polygonal shape having a cutting end including a front end wall, sides, and top and bottom surfaces. The intersection of the top surface, end wall and sides forming a cutting edge. The top surface includes a cutting land sloping downwardly and inwardly from the cutting edge, a chipgroove area adjoining the cutting land and extending inwardly therefrom and disposed at a lower elevation than the cutting edge, and an upsloping chipbreaker portion adjoining the chipgroove area and the cutting land and leading to a plateau disposed at a higher elevation than the cutting edge and chipgroove area. The chipbreaker portion is configured symmetrically about a line bisecting the top surface between the sides and includes a forwardly extending fingerlike projection on either side of and continuous with a rearwardly recessed region bisected by the line.

  • Patent number: 5599141
Abstract: A chip control insert is disclosed having positive, concave radiused chip breaker entry surfaces, and a locating surface which is equipped with a planar sealing surface and inclined, convex, radiused chip breaker ramp surfaces which undulate along the length of the insert. The intersection of the back ramp surface and the entry surface defines a chip groove. The locating surface has radial nose projections and radius bulges intermediate the length of the polygon sides of the insert.

  • Patent number: 5549425
Abstract: A two cutting edge, indexable insert with integral pressed-in chip breaker wherein the cutting edges are symmetrically inverted relative to each other to thereby provide indexing therebetween. Each cutting edge is provided with a plurality of noses and gullets. The shape of the noses and gullets is predetermined to provide a predetermined thread contour, such as a buttress thread form. Each pressed in chip breaker is spaced from the adjacent cutting edge by a land and is in the form of a raised island having an incident face contour corresponding to the nose-and-gullet shape of the adjacent cutting edge. Each land is angled such that when the insert is mounted for use with an intended inclination, portions of the land are at neutral rake when engaging a workpiece.

  • Patent number: 5549424
Abstract: An indexable threading and turning insert with integral press-in chip breakers, having a threading insert portion and a turning insert portion. Each of the threading insert portion and the turning insert portion has, respectively, an integral pressed-in chip breaker having ideal chip management characteristics. The indexable threading and turning insert has a substantially diamond shape having a first planar face, an opposite second planar face, and four insert faces extending between the first and second planar faces. The threading insert portion is characterized by a first cutting edge formed at the intersection of the first insert face and a first land and a second cutting edge formed at the intersection of the second insert face and a second land. The first and second cutting edges have a plurality of noses separated by gullets.

  • Patent number: 5456557
Abstract: An indexable cutting insert having a polygonal body including top and bottom surfaces connected by a peripheral wall having sides and corners. In a generally diamond shaped embodiment, opposite acutely angled corners and the adjacent sides form cutting edges at their junctures with the top surface, forming noses at the corners. A narrow cutting land extends inward from each cutting edge and slopes downward from the nose along both adjacent sides. A chip groove includes a pair of wedge faces, sloping downwardly from the cutting land to a flat floor and a radius blend juncture aligned with the nose and bisecting the adjacent sides. A pair of chipbreaker faces slope upward from the flat floor and backward from a ridge that connects the chipbreaker faces and is upwardly aligned with the juncture of the cutting faces. Various additional features are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5449255
Abstract: A flat disk-like tool insert has a plurality of arcuate cutter tips for machining the side surface of a rotating work piece, and a plurality of linear cutting edges for machining a chamfer on the end of the work piece. An endless land surface is contiguous with the cutter tips and the linear cutting edges so as to deflect metal chips away from the machined surfaces. Each tool tip is aligned with two chip breaker ledges that are arranged in a step configuration, such that chips of varying thickness can be effectively and cleanly broken without interference with the machining process. A third chip breaker ledge is set back from each linear cutting edge for breaking chips generated during a chamfering operation.

  • Patent number: 5000626
Abstract: An indexable cutting insert of the type having a corner radius and a corner angle adapted for finishing operations comprises a pair of substantially parallel spaced apart faces and at least one peripheral side surface being substantially normal to said faces. A pair of straight cutting edge extend away from the corner at the juncture of the peripheral side surface and a plane positioned closely adjacent and below the juncture of a respective face. To break the chips formed during cutting, a chip breaker recess extents rearwardly and along the cutting edges. The chip breaker recess includes a descending control surface leading to the bottom of the recess followed by an ascending control surface. The descending control surface comprises a first and second planar descending control surface with the first surface being at a shallow angle and the second surface being at a steep angle.
