  • Patent number: 6258400
Abstract: A process and apparatus for holding a plurality of medicaments to be coated is disclosed. A support member is provided having a receiving surface with a plurality of channels to communicate a vacuum across the receiving surface and an aperture operable to couple the plurality of channels to a vacuum source. A flexible mat having a perimeter shaped to engage the support member in a sealed relation is provided on the support member. The flexible mat includes a plurality of medicament receptacles mounted to a first surface and adapted to receive the medicaments. The medicament receptacles initially are in a first position when no vacuum is applied. In the first position, the medicament receptacles are positioned to receive a medicament. When a vacuum is applied, the medicament receptacles change to a second position in which the medicament receptacles are positioned to hold the medicament and permit coating thereof.

  • Patent number: 6195911
Abstract: A process and apparatus for the gelatin coating of medicaments which includes a continuous conveyer system to advance a plurality of pallets through a loading station, at least one dipping station, at least one dryer station, a reorientation station and an unloading station. Medicaments to be coated are loaded into pallets at the loading station and advanced to the first dipping station where a vacuum is applied to secure the medicament to the pallet. The pallet is inverted and a first portion of each of the medicaments is dipped into a coating mixture. The pallet is then returned to its upright position, the vacuum is removed and the coating is dried. The medicaments are then transferred from the first pallet to a second pallet by a reorientation mechanism. The second pallet is then advanced to a second dipping station which operates in the same manner as the first dipping station.

  • Patent number: 6132159
Abstract: Medicaments on a first pallet are transferred onto a second pallet, thereby reorienting the medicaments. The first pallet is received on a first lift plate and the second pallet is received on a second lift plate in vertical opposition to the first lift plate. A lift mechanism urges the first and second lift plates towards one another and the first and second lift plates are inverted so that the medicaments are transferred from said first pallet to said second pallet.

  • Patent number: 5579951
Abstract: An apparatus (10) for orienting and loading solid compact medicaments, such as solid compact medicaments (A), into a carrier device (C) comprises a feeder (12) having a plurality of elongated first channels (20) through which the solid compact medicaments travel with an acute angle relative to a predetermined orientation of the carrier device (C). An orienting member (32) cooperating with the feeder (12) reorients the solid compact medicaments to the predetermined orientation as they exit the feeder (12). In an alternative embodiment, a pitch changing means (42) in fluid communications with the orienting means (32) provides for final orientation of the solid compact medicaments prior to loading in the carrier device (C).

  • Patent number: 5514216
Abstract: An apparatus for holding and subsequently releasing a solid compact medicament, such as a caplet. The apparatus has a first and a second member each having an upper and a lower surface. The first and second members each have at least one notch opposed to each other and correspondingly aligned and extending beyond the respective upper and lower surfaces of each member. The first and second members have chambers adjacent to each of the notches, and each of the notches is moveable in the respective chamber of the opposing member so that the opposing notches form a gripping jaw that can move between a first and a second position. When the gripping jaw is in an open first position, it can receive a solid compact medicament, and in a closed second position, the gripping jaw can grip the medicament.

  • Patent number: 5391230
Abstract: An apparatus for capturing and holding a solid compact medicament, such as a caplet, has first, second and third members each having a surface having at least one throughole therein. Througholes have a diameter somewhat greater than the thickness of the solid compact medicament and the interior wall of the througholes 1as an axial length smaller than the length of the solid compact medicament. First and third members are fixed relative to one another. Second member is displaceable between first and third members between a first position wherein the througholes in members are aligned thereby defining an open gripping jaw for receiving and subsequently releasing the solid compact medicament, to a second position wherein the second member firmly engages a circumferential portion of solid compact medicament thereby engagingly capturing solid compact medicament in partially closed gripping jaw for processing.

  • Patent number: 5387287
Abstract: An apparatus for holding a solid compact medicament has relatively displaceable, substantially planar first and second members having opposed edge portions. Each edge portion has at least one notch having an interior wall. Housing is provided for holding members in a substantially co-planar relationship. When members are displaced, preferably along a fixed axis, to a first position, the interior walls of the opposed, aligned notches define an open gripping jaw for receiving and subsequently releasing the caplet. Further, when members are displaced to a second position, the open gripping jaw then partially closes, thereby capturing the caplet securely within the notches in the gripping jaw for processing.

  • Patent number: 5328726
Abstract: The present invention discloses edge guides (12) for use in guiding a curtain (17) of coating liquid onto a moving support. Each edge guide (12) is made of two or more small diameter wires (20) spaced apart a distance and running from the hopper lip (16) to the support web. The distance between the wires is approximately the thickness of the curtain. Flushing solution is introduced between the wires (20) near the hopper lip (16) and removed near the support web (15).

  • Patent number: 4830887
Abstract: Method and apparatus for applying one or a plurality of superimposed layers of a photographic coating composition by the curtain coating method onto a moving support. The spacing between the edge guides, used to maintain the width of a curtain throughout its free fall from the coating hopper to the impingement line on the support, is arranged to coat less than the width of the support so as to provide an uncoated margin on the support. The curtain fluids are extracted from the edge region of the falling curtain by connecting a suction device to the edge guides near the point of impingement of the falling curtain, thus substantially reducing the thickness of the curtain at its edge region and thereby reducing the thickness of the coated edges.
