  • Patent number: 7831236
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for use in securely provisioning a mobile communication device in a wireless local area network (WLAN) having a plurality of wireless access points (APs) are described. In one illustrative method, a provisioning procedure is performed between the mobile communication device and the WLAN via the provisioning wireless AP while the mobile communication device is positioned within a provisioning radio frequency (RF) coverage region of the provisioning wireless AP. However, the provisioning RF coverage region is otherwise confined so that a plurality of other mobile communication devices of the WLAN are restricted from access therefrom during the provisioning procedure. The provisioning RF coverage region may be confined by providing the provisioning wireless AP within a secured room, by providing an electromagnetic shield around the provisioning wireless AP, or both, as examples.

  • Publication number: 20090135918
Abstract: A processor and method are provided for decoding a multimedia file having video and audio data streams that are configured to be played in synchronization. Frames of the video stream are decoded and played with the audio and, to compensate for saturation of the processor usage, two procedures are performed. The first procedure operates at a first periodic interval and slows down the frame rate to reduce processor usage if needed. The second procedure first attempts to speed up the video to catch up to the audio if they are out of sync and if this cannot be done in the next time interval, the decoding of a select number of frames is skipped such that the video and audio data streams are resynchronized.

  • Publication number: 20090138962
Abstract: In one illustrative example, a mobile communication device includes a wireless transceiver, one or more processors coupled to the wireless transceiver, and memory for storing a communications application. The communications application may be a VoIP telephony application which involves communication in accordance with a session initiation protocol (SIP). The processor operates to establish the communications for the communications application by performing the following acts upon invocation of the communications application when the mobile communication device is connected in a communication network outside of a private network. Initially, the processor causes a request for a virtual private network (VPN) connection with the private network to be communicated, and awaits the establishment of the VPN connection.

  • Patent number: 7505421
Abstract: A mobile communication device includes a wireless transceiver, one or more processors coupled to the wireless transceiver, memory, and a communications application stored in the memory. The communications application may be a VoIP telephony application which involves communication in accordance with a session initiation protocol (SIP). The one or more processors are operative to receive a public IP address assigned to the mobile device in a public network; cause a request for a virtual private network (VPN) connection with a private network to be communicated; refrain from registering with a SIP server for the communications using the public IP address; and if the VPN connection is established: receive a private IP address assigned to the mobile device for the VPN connection and cause a request for session registration using the private IP address to be communicated to a SIP server of the private network.

  • Publication number: 20080182565
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for use by a mobile communication device in facilitating voice calls through a wireless local area network (WLAN) and a wireless wide area network (WWAN) are disclosed. When switching communication operations from a WLAN coverage region of the WLAN to a WWAN coverage region of the WWAN, the mobile device causes a message for forwarding voice calls to a WWAN identification number of the mobile device to be transmitted through the WLAN. The mobile device subsequently causes a message for cancelling the forwarding of voice calls to a WLAN identification number of the mobile device to be transmitted through the WWAN. When switching communication operations from the WWAN coverage region of the WWAN to the WLAN coverage region of the WLAN, the mobile device causes a message for forwarding voice calls to the WLAN identification number of the mobile device to be transmitted through the WWAN.

  • Publication number: 20080148359
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for use in provisioning mobile communication devices in wireless local area networks (WLANs) are described. In one illustrative example, a provisioning network identifier (“provisioning ESSID”) is derived based on both predetermined provisioning criteria (e.g. a fixed alphanumeric string) and network-specific criteria associated with a WLAN (eg a network domain name). The mobile device associates with a wireless access point of a provisioning virtual local area network (VLAN) of the network with use of the provisioning network identifier. After associating with the wireless access point with the provisioning network identifier, a primary network identifier (“primary ESSID”) associated with a primary VLAN of the network is received from the WLAN in a provisioning procedure and stored in memory of the mobile device after authentication.
