Patent number: 9737964Abstract: A process of remanufacturing a component such as an attachment flange used in turbochargers is provided and includes using a steam oxidation process to form an adhesion layer on top of a sealing surface of the component. The adhesion layer is an oxidation layer that a thermal metal spray coating can be applied on top of in order to prevent spalling that can occur at high heat. Once the process is completed, the component can be inspected to ensure that it meets or exceeds the manufacturer's original specifications.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 2015Date of Patent: August 22, 2017Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Daniel Sordelet, Thomas Clements, Robert Sharp

Publication number: 20050133120Abstract: An article and method for forming an article having a hard-finished surface including a predetermined density of carbides to improve pitting and wear resistance and to significantly increase the overall life of the article. This method comprises selecting a carburizing grade material to form an article, carburizing the article to form a microstructure on at least one portion of the article having a predetermined density of carbides dispersed in the microstructure to a predetermined depth, quenching the article to form a hardened matrix dispersed with carbides and hard finishing the article to form the surface, the surface having at least approximately 20% by volume fraction carbides dispersed in the hardened matrix.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2003Publication date: June 23, 2005Inventors: John Walenta, Charles Berndt, Thomas Clements, Steven Cross, Timothy Hoefft, Gary Keil

Patent number: 5244118Abstract: An apparatus for blending two gases together in precisely adjustable proportions. The apparatus includes a mechanically adjustable, blending subassembly adapted to receive the first gas at a predetermined pressure and a one-to-one force balanced pneumatic relay which is operated by the first gas and which meters the flow of the second gas to the blending subassembly at a pressure substantially equal to the pressure of the first gas being supplied to the blending subassembly. Check valves are strategically located to prevent back flow of either of the gases being mixed when the device is being operated in the low-flow mode, thereby eliminating the requirement for time consuming balancing of the gas flow pressures.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 1992Date of Patent: September 14, 1993Inventors: Merton R. Fallon, deceased, by Edward A. Landry, executor, Thomas Clements

Patent number: 4566476Abstract: A safety flow control device for use in a beverage distribution system of the character using pressurized gas to dispense the beverage from its containers for ensuring that the containers are not accidentally overpressurized. The device of the invention is adapted to be placed in the line which connects the pressure source to the containers for the beverage. The device embodies a rupture disc having a first side exposed to the gas used in pressurizing the containers and a second side exposed to atmosphere. Strategically positioned between the pressure inlet of the device and the pressure side of the rupture disc is a valving mechanism which is maintained in an open configuration by the rupture disc. In the open configuration the valving mechanism permits the gas to flow from the inlet into a first sub-chamber defined by the first side of the rupture disc and then outwardly through the outlet of the device.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 1985Date of Patent: January 28, 1986Assignee: Draft Systems, Inc.Inventors: Merton R. Fallon, Thomas Clements
