Patent number: 5439126Abstract: A one-piece plastics closure for a carbonated beverage bottle has a sealing ring which extends inwardly and downardly towards the closure mouth from its attachment to the closure body. When the closure is fitted the ring extends around the outer radius and over the annular top face of the bottle neck, backed by a stepless abutment and reaction surface of the closure body. The latter surface engages the sealing ring mechanically above the container top face to determine the fitted position of the closure and create a seal when the pressure in the bottle is low. When the product pressure is high, however, the effective seal is made between the sealing ring and the outer radius of the bottle neck. For that purpose the abutment and reaction surface is roughened, so allowing access for the product pressure to the back of the sealing ring.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 1995Date of Patent: August 8, 1995Assignee: CarnaudMetalBox plcInventor: Thomas D. Patent number: 4765265Abstract: An embroidery and applique machine having a number of article feeding modules, each adapted to supply articles such as sequins which are to be appliqued in alignment with a needle. The feeder modules are mounted on a carriage for movement therewith. A motor moves the carriage back and forth along a fixed path relative to the needles. An indexing mechanism is effective for stopping the carriage at any one of a number of positions in which the feeder modules are in register with the needles for supplying articles in alignment with a particular needle. A number of carriages may be provided at positions relative to the needles. A lost motion flange on the carriage contacts abutments on the indexing mechanism and enables the feeder modules on the carriage to register with the needles irrespective of the direction of movement of the carriage on the path.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1986Date of Patent: August 23, 1988Assignee: Jakob Schlaepfer & Co., AG.Inventors: Thomas D. Patent number: 4598835Abstract: A one-piece plastics closure for a carbonated beverage bottle has a sealing ring (17) pivotally attached at the junction between its closure panel (10) and dependant skirt (11). The sealing ring is forked, having two annular and mutually divergent fins 20,21. The upper fin (20) is engaged by the free end of the container neck as the closure is fitted, and by pivotal movement of the sealing ring brings the lower fin (21) into sealing relation with the side surface of the container finish. The resilience of the closure material and the substantial deformation to which the sealing ring is subject thereafter maintain the effectiveness of the seal despite creep and backing-off of the closure which may occur.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1984Date of Patent: July 8, 1986Assignee: Metal Box Public Limited CompanyInventor: Thomas D. Patent number: 4494898Abstract: A plastics member (16) is sealingly secured to a sheet metal member (10) by creating in the sheet metal member (10) an opening which is defined by a free edge (14) of the sheet metal, forming-up a marginal region (12) of the sheet metal member (10) around the location of the opening, receiving the plastics member (16) in the opening, and re-forming the marginal region (12) so as to close the opening onto the plastics member (16) and cause the free edge (14) to bite into and seal around the plastics member (16).Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1982Date of Patent: January 22, 1985Assignee: Metal Box p.l.c.Inventor: Thomas D. Patent number: 4249362Abstract: A method for applying a threaded closure to a container, said closure having sealing means in or towards the crown thereof, which method comprises applying the closure to the container by the application of a predetermined rotary torque thereto, continuing the application of the closure to the container until the desired torque applied is obtained and thereafter applying axial pressure to the closure crown towards and on to the container while simultaneously applying said torque whereby the closure pressure serves to disengage the threads to overcome at least some of the friction therebetween to permit a greater proportion of the applied torque to be applied to the sealing means within the closure.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1978Date of Patent: February 10, 1981Assignee: Metal Closures Group LimitedInventor: Thomas D. Patent number: 4220250Abstract: The present invention relates to a closure for a container the contents of which are to be pressurized characterized by having a crown and a depending skirt, retaining means provided in or on said skirt adapted to co-operate with a neck of the container to which the closure is to be applied, a flexible annular sealing ring extending from an internal surface of the closure adapted to engage in sealing relationship with a container neck and a support ring depending from the crown of the closure and disposed substantially concentrically within the sealing ring and arranged to limit the flexing of the sealing ring relative to the axis of the closure whereby the pressure of the contents of the container permeates between the support of the sealing rings to urge the ring into sealing engagement with the neck of the container to which the closure is applied the skirt has a bead at the level of the sealing ring extremity to center the closure on the neck as the sealing ring and neck are brought into sealing engagemenType: GrantFiled: April 5, 1979Date of Patent: September 2, 1980Assignee: Metal Closures Group LimitedInventor: Thomas D. Patent number: 4196818Abstract: The present invention is concerned with a one-piece pressure resistant container closure including a pilfer proof ring and associated sealing means provided in or towards the crown of the closure whereby it is possible to apply the closure to a container without substantial risk of rupture between a skirt extension portion of the closure constituting a security ring and the remainder of the closure.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1978Date of Patent: April 8, 1980Assignee: Metal Closures Group LimitedInventor: Thomas D.
