    Abstract: The present invention is directed to a system and method for accessing home monitoring devices remotely via a distributed wide-area network (WAN). More specifically, the present invention is directed towards smoke detector system, which monitors for the presence of smoke and communicates the smoke condition to a remote location. The smoke detection system comprises a smoke detection device connected to a communication device. The smoke detection device outputs a signal or a change in a signal upon detection of smoke. This signal or change in signal is monitored by the communication device. The smoke condition is then communicated to the remote central location via a message system.

The transceiver circuit includes a line interface circuit configured to interface with a telephone line that is part of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and initiate a phone call over the telephone line. Finally, the system includes a central station remotely located from said transceiver but being in communication with said transceiver via the PSTN The central station further include a decoder configured to decode the instruction code.

    Abstract: The present invention is generally directed to a system and method for monitoring the level of light surrounding an automatic teller machine (ATM). In accordance with one aspect of the invention, a system includes a plurality of light sensors disposed in varying locations around the ATM. Preferably, some sensors will be disposed near the ATM, while others will be dispersed at various distances surrounding the ATM, in order to effectively monitor the lighting around the ATM. A circuit is provided within the ATM in communication with the sensors. In addition, a radio frequency (RF) transmitter is disposed within the ATM, and is configured to communicate the status of the sensors to a remotely located receiver. Finally, a receiver is interfaced to a telephone line forming part of a public switched telephone network (PSTN), wherein the receiver is configured to receive the status of the sensors communicated from the RF transmitter and to communicate the status information to a remote system via the PSTN.

    Abstract: A system and method for providing remote access to a pay-type telephone. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, the system includes a pay-type telephone, and a receiver provided at the telephone for receiving data transmitted via a electromagnetic waves. Although not necessary for the invention, in a preferred the telephone includes a card reader for receiving and reading magnetically encoded cards. In this embodiment, the receiver is operatively and electrically connected to the magnetic card reader, so as to allow the system to operate either by access from a remote transmitter or by way of an inserted card. The system of the invention further includes a remote access unit having a memory configured to store user identification data and a low-power transmitter adapted to transmit the user identification data to the receiver.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a personalized security system, in which a portable transmitter may be carried or worn by an individual and activated by the individual in need of assistance to transmit data relating specifically to the individual. The data is received by a transceiver located nearby to the individual and transmitted with additional data to a remote receiver. The remote receiver then forwards information relating to the data to emergency personnel who use the information to determine the location of the individual, as well as particulars relating specifically to the individual, such as a name and a physical description.
