  • Patent number: 5437821
Abstract: Carbon-carbon composites of acceptable shrinkage and with negligible voids re prepared in a single casting step from acetylene-terminated Schiff's base monomers by melting a selected monomer, polymerizing it within a mold to form a green casting, and heating the casting to a carbonizing temperature. Blends of monomers may be used. Graphite may be admixed with the melted monomer to form a slurry before molding. Graphite in the form of woven graphite fiber may alternatively be positioned within the mold before the melted monomer is added thereto.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 30, 1993
Date of Patent: August 1, 1995
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Navy
Inventors: Thomas Diberardino, Vincent J. Castelli
  • Patent number: 5321165
Abstract: A method of producing an ethynyl aromatic aldehyde comprises reacting a protected copper(I) acetylide salt with a halogen substituted aromatic compound to produce a protected ethynyl aromatic aldehyde. The protected ethynyl aromatic aldehyde may be deprotected to yield an acetylene terminated aromatic aldehyde which is useful for making acetylenic Schiff's base monomers and conductive polymers thereof.

Inventors: Thomas DiBerardino, Patricia M. Lutz, Barbara F. Howell
  • Patent number: 5281672
Abstract: A method for producing acetylide polymers substantially without charring or decomposition comprises heating a mixture comprising an acetylene terminated monomer and a prepolymer of said monomer, resulting in a lower reaction exotherm.
