  • Patent number: 6080441
Abstract: A composition of matter useful as a leavening acid produced by heating anhydrous monocalcium phosphate for a suitable time and at a suitable temperature so that the resulting composition contains between about 25 and about 72 percent by weight of P.sub.2 O.sub.7 is provided.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 8, 1998
Date of Patent: June 27, 2000
    Assignee: Rhodia Inc.
Inventors: Frank H. Y. Chung, Thomas E. Edging
  • Patent number: 4684512
Abstract: The invention is a process for recovering phosphorus value from magnesium pyrophosphate containing filter media in the wet superphosphoric acid purification process. The invention comprises treating the filter cake with a salt to remove the adhering phosphoric acid without solubilizing magnesium acid pyrophosphate. The filter cake, after phosphoric acid removal, can be utilized as commercial or technical grade magnesium acid pyrophosphate.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: August 4, 1987
    Assignee: Stauffer Chemical Company
Inventors: John M. Stewart, Teddy R. Clark, Thomas E. Edging
  • Patent number: 4500557
Abstract: A new leavening acid composition characterized by a slow reaction rate is provided comprising a heat treated potassium modified 1:3:8 sodium aluminum phosphate such that the L.O.I. (loss on ignition) ranges between about 11 and about 14 and such that the leavening acid has a neutralizing value above 90. The leavening action of the new leavening acid is slower than non-heat treated SALP. The compositions are useful in leavening baked goods and especially refrigerated canned biscuits, pancakes and cakes.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 18, 1982
Date of Patent: February 19, 1985
    Assignee: Stauffer Chemical Company
    Inventor: Thomas E. Edging
  • Patent number: 4454103
Abstract: A high acid monocalcium phosphate can be prepared by partially neutralizing phosphoric acid with lime. A substantially non-caking product can be made by hydrating the high acid product dried to a L.O.I. of between about 16% to less than 18.5% with water to an L.O.I. of from 18.5% to about 23% and drying to a free water content of less than 1%. The product is useful in effervescent dry beverage mixes and pharmaceuticals.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 20, 1983
Date of Patent: June 12, 1984
    Assignee: Stauffer Chemical Company
Inventors: Robert E. Benjamin, Thomas E. Edging
  • Patent number: 4335154
Abstract: The method of preparing a baked product which is leavened with the aid of a leavening acid. The leavening acid being prepared by adding calcium sulfate to an alkali metal aluminum phosphate slurry prior to drying same.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 11, 1980
Date of Patent: June 15, 1982
    Assignee: Stauffer Chemical Company
Inventors: Robert E. Benjamin, Thomas E. Edging
  • Patent number: 4260591
Abstract: The addition of calcium sulfate to an alkali metal aluminum phosphate slurry prior to drying provides an improved process which results in a cleaner reactor, easier drying and granulation, increased production rates, a decreased mill heat requirement and a product having an increased density which is less dusty allowing for easier handling, and substantially non-hygroscopic which avoids caking and blinding of classifier screens.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 21, 1978
Date of Patent: April 7, 1981
    Assignee: Stauffer Chemical Company
Inventors: Robert E. Benjamin, Thomas E. Edging
  • Patent number: 4196226
Abstract: Alkali metal aluminum phosphate granules having a calcium rich outer surface are provided which are characterized by improved flow and dusting properties as well as lower hygroscopicity without a change in leavening acid performance. The product can be used as a leavening acid in moist doughs, and liquid batters, such as pancake batters and other premixed liquid batter. Longer storage life for liquid or dry products is possible.

  • Patent number: 3954939
Abstract: A method for preparing a hydrated monocalcium phosphate, with reduced caking tendencies and quick carbon dioxide release, from a monocalcium phosphate composition having a loss on ignition between about 14 and less than 17% by admixing water with the monocalcium phosphate and permitting the water and monocalcium phosphate to remain in contact for a sufficient length of time to form a hydrated monocalcium phosphate composition having a loss on ignition between 17 and 21.5%. The product is dried to a free moisture content of less than about 1% if the free moisture content is above this level.
