  • Patent number: 5326171
Abstract: A method for sensing the temperature of a remote object within a chamber that is heated from outside the chamber, includes sensing radiation from the object within the chamber through a window in the wall of the chamber that exhibits different transmissivity than the wall of the chamber to radiation in a selected waveband relative to the waveband of the radiation supplied through the wall of the chamber to heat the object within the chamber.

Inventors: Thomas E. Thompson, Eugene R. Westerberg
  • Patent number: 5188458
Abstract: Dual pyrometric detectors and method measure the temperature of a remote heated object in the presence of ambient radiation. One detector measures emitted radiation from both the remote object and from the environment, and the other detector measures radiation predominantly from the environment alone. The output signals from the two detectors are processed electronically to yield the detected radiation from the remote object alone. The result can then be electronically processed to display the pyrometrically-measured temperature of the remote object.

  • Patent number: 5164301
Abstract: A process and kit for detecting microbial metabolism is disclosed, the process including the steps of combining medium, a metabolic dye having an absorbance spectrum which in the presence of microorganisms changes and responds to metabolism of the microorganism and a second analytical dye having an excitation or emission spectrum which overlaps with one of the changed or unchanged absorbance spectra of the first dye. The medium contains a sample solution to be analyzed for containing metabolizing microorganisms. The user observes either no change in the fluorescence emissions of the second analytical dye indicating the absence of metabolizing microorganisms in the sample or a change indicating the presence of metabolizing microorganisms in the sample.

  • Patent number: 5096668
Abstract: A diagnostic test slide for performing diagnostic tests for detecting the presence of microogranisms, enzymes or metabolites comprising a plastic film having a coating therein comprising a carrier and a reagent. The coated film is placed in a mount that is constructed and arranged to form a border around a portion of the film. A method is provided for making the test slide utilizing conventional, automated devices for making coated photographic films, and conventional, automated devices for mounting slide film in mounts.

  • Patent number: 5061084
Abstract: Dual pyrometric detectors and method measure the temperature of a remote heated object in the presence of ambient radiation. One detector measures emitted radiation from both the remote object and from the environment, and the other direction measures radiation predominantly from the environment alone. The output signals from the two detectors are processed electronically to yield the detected radiation from the remote object alone. The result can then be electronically processed to display the pyrometrically-measured temperature of the remote object.

  • Patent number: 4801049
Abstract: A container and finger-depressible pump combination having improved non-leaking characteristics when the container holds a fluid (e.g., a volatile fluid such as nail polish remover) is described. The container which holds the fluid has a finger-depressible pump joined to its opened upper neck with the portion of the pump normally extending into the fluid in the container being encased in a closed but removable shroud which encases and isolates that portion of the pump and the adjacent portions of the pump from contact with the fluid. The shroud is a generally tubular structure being closed at its lower end and having circumferential flange means at its opposed open upper end which are adapted to be seated upon the upper land surface of the container neck underneath a portion of the cap holding the pump.

  • Patent number: 4732855
Abstract: An improved process for the production of propionic acid comprises cultivating a propionic acid-producing bacterium anaerobically in a medium which contains a simple carbohydrate, which can be converted by the bacterium to pyruvate, as well as essential minerals, vitamins, and growth factors under an overpressure of hydrogen which is effective to cause a hydrogenase produced by the bacterium to suppress the oxidation of pyruvate to acetate and carbon dioxide and to promote the formation of propionic acid.
